Heading to NoPo to learn about the culture and legacy of Vanport with @deathandfood at the #vanportmosaicfestival!
For those not in the know, Vanport was a "temporary" city built in the aftermath of World War II. It had the second highest population in the state, 40% of whom were PoC. It eventually flooded and was completely destroyed, displacing thousands of BIPOC, with little warning and intervention from the state.
My understanding is the land is now used for a racing track or some other BS that doesn't really replace or acknowledge what was lost in terms of culture, business, lives, and housing.
