Opening Saturday, November 17 at the @nationalportraitgallery in London is a solo exhibition bringing together new and existing works from Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s ongoing series, The Beautyful Ones. This series of portraits of Nigerian youth includes members of the artist’s family. Akunyili Crosby’s experience of syncretic cultures in both Nigeria and the United States informs the subject matter of her artworks. “The reason I decided to do art,” said the artist in an interview with @ft_weekend, “was because that was where there seemed more of a sense of urgency. Art is where I really felt I had something to contribute, something fresh, something relevant, and something needed.” David Zwirner recently announced the representation of Njideka Akunyili Crosby in collaboration with @victoriamirogallery.
