you and soda had been best friends forever. you’d grown up together. there was almost never a time where you weren’t stuck hip to hip. even in school, you had all of your classes together. that’s why you were so devastated when he dropped out.
since soda dropped out, he’d never kept up with the things going on in school. that meant he didn’t know you’d be graduating in a week.
you decided you were going to tell him tonight at dinner. it would just be you and soda. ponyboy went with johnny to stay at two-bit’s and darry had to work late. -
when you walked through the front door of the curtis house, you heard sodapop singing along to an elvis song and tapping on something. “... I found a new place to dwell!” you yelled, sliding into the kitchen.
Soda jumped, startled out of his elvis daze, and started laughing. “(Y/N)!” Soda wrapped his arms around your head, rubbing his knuckles against it.
you pushed out of his grip, and sat down at the table. Soda made mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese, your favorite food. you were almost too nervous to eat, though.
it’d been silent for almost ten minutes, before you blurred out, “I gotta tell you something.” He sat his fork down and looked up at you, waiting for you to speak again. “I’m graduating in a week.” you waited for him to say something but he never did, so you continued, “and I’ll be leaving for college in three.” soda still didn’t say a word, he just stared at you with the saddest face you’d ever seen him give.
