After two terrible films back to back (The Dark Tower, Song to Song), i decided to pick a movie, that I hope, is at least better then ok. I’ve never heard about Colossal until it came out, and when it came out people liked it. I saw the trailer for it, and it had an interesting concept, I was more interested to see how it plays out in a movie. This movie does have a promising cast, and a talented director. But if 2017 has shown me anything it’s that those two qualities could mean jack shit towards the actual movie. Of course as more people saw it, Colossal got more mixed reviews, but I’m just really hoping for a good one here. So let’s see if this will be a Colossal win or a colossal fail.
A woman discovers that severe catastrophic events are somehow connected to the mental break down from which she is suffering. Colossal isn’t a monster movie, it’s a drama. Let me explain, in concept this is a good idea, but I’m assuming the filmmakers didn’t know what plot to make from a concept like this, so they turned this movie into a self discovery drama. Colossal is a character driven film, and this movie tries to make you care about these characters, but I didn’t and I’m sure most people won’t. If you’re here to watch a monster movie you might leave disappointed. I didn’t care for the drama at all, the whole beginning was generic and that’s how most of the characters are. As for the characters, they’re what prevent this movie from becoming great. Gloria is an unemployed writer who after breaking up with her boyfriend moves back to her hometown and discovers she can control a monster somehow. I didn’t care for this character at all, she was very stereotypical and while Anne Hathaway gives a good performance she can’t help save this character from lackluster writing. Oscar is Gloria’s old friend who gives her a job at his bar when she returns home. Oscar was ok, I fully understood his character at the end of the movie, but he had this awkward relationship with Gloria and that prevented me from liking him more. As for the rest of the characters, they’re just useless side characters. Tim is Gloria’s ex who wants her to return to New York. Continued in Comments.
