Total Recall is actually a pretty decent film. Taking place in the not too distant future, Arnold Schwartzenegger is Douglas Quaid. Quaid has been having nightmares about a mysterious woman, and Mars, in which he is a secret agent. He goes to get memories implanted that would make these dreams less fantasy, and more reality. However upon entrance into this trance, Quaid is awakened into the reality that he actually is this secret agent from Mars. Quaid must flee from the powers at be, while making sense of these new found memories, or are they just illusions. The script is honestly pretty good in regards to originality and story structure. The biggest stumbling block for this film is its dialogue, and lead actor. As much as I love Schwarzenegger, he is not a premiere actor. I wish they got an actor who could have portrayed a more nuanced version of Quaid. This alone would have made this film even more of a classic than it already is. The special effects were also a little cheesy, and I wished they looked for alternatives to some of the effects they did. Just a little side note, if they toned down on the violence, sex, and language, I think they could have gotten away with making this film for the whole family. Total Recall is a fun 90s movie that doesn't fully reach its potential.
