Historically, architecture has not served Canada’s indigenous people well. Inadequate models have been imported, often leading to a colonizing impact. An option design studio taught by Associate Professor Mason White in 2016, challenged students to pursue the possibilities of a contemporary traditional architecture that is culturally grounded, yet resists nostalgia.
.
The Stanton Territorial Health Authority, an existing health network in the North West Territories now under renewal, formed the basis for a design response. Students considered the challenge of health access and delivery for a dispersed population with minimal infrastructure, as well as integrated relationships to land, seasonality, and territory. For many Indigenous peoples, urbanism is almost antithetical to cultural wellbeing, presenting a fundamental conundrum to architecture’s agency in this context.

One of the dynamic moments of interplay between the old and new buildings at #OneSpadina occurs in the catacomb-like space of the library stacks under the bleachers of the Principal Hall. #Concrete struts support the bleachers of the lecture hall above. Swipe right to see the transformation during construction. The final touches are now being put on shelving and lighting in the stacks in time for the start of school in September. Julia Song's thesis, Vertical[City], looked at the limits of Toronto's residential condos and proposed a solution to improve the quality of life within them. Writes Song, "Rem Koohaus famously characterized buildings as having the potential to create their own microcosms — 'cities within cities' in which metropolitan life can be contained, with its social and ideological implications made radically explicit. This architectural form has adapted to new social activities and relaced the pure building type."

#UofTDaniels #undergraduate #students — Kian Hosseinnia, Ous Abou Ras, Dima Ghazal, Pearl Cao and Tina Siassi — realized their winning submission in the @urbprk competition this week in #Edmonton #Alberta. Titled Aperture, their installation on 82 Avenue outside @cafemosaics takes over two on-street parking spots, creating a mini urban park, or #parklet, where passersby may hang out, socialize, and relax. Aperture will remain up for the rest of the summer, and will even host music performances starting July 23rd.

Jelly bean sedums in full bloom! #jellybean

This week, #undergraduate students in our Research Opportunity Program (ARC399H1) have been at Hart House Farm. The two-week intensive workshop offers students and unique opportunity to collaboratively design and build a structure at the farm in the Caledon Hills on the ridge of the Niagara Escarpment.
The studio, entitled “Nocturne Elemental”, was established as an environment for discourse, digital design, craftwork, fabrication, and construction with a particular emphasis upon the areas where analog and digital design overlap, trade places, and inform each other. More photos to come!

Junhao Fu investigated coastal engineering, public realm interventions and additions, and local re-urbanization opportunities along Havana's waterfront, which suffers from overtopping by waves and sometimes floods. New islands along the Malecón, an 8-km long esplanade and seawall along the coast, introduce dynamic public spaces and reintroduce a natural environment, currently missing. .
