Alumnus Tye Farrow (BArch 1987) has designed a bold solution to help address the need for more affordable housing in Toronto — and the Bloor Viaduct, one of city’s most iconic bridges, is at the heart of his plan. His proposal would transform the bridge from a single-use function into a multi-use one. In addition to connecting the neighbourhoods west of the Don Valley Ravine with those to the east, the bridge could providing places to live, places to play, and places to work and shop — and be a popular tourist destination to boot.

. "There are few government-owned or low-cost sites in the city’s core available for development," writes Farrow in his proposal for Living Bridges (which can be found on his firm's website). "The quest to identify economical sites that are near public transit as well as suitable for quick construction will require innovative thinking and bold action." The view into the Daniels Corporation Atrium after exiting the 2nd floor undergraduate studio. To the right is a view into the Principal Hall, a large lecture hall and event space in the building's core, currently under construction. The clerestory windows in the ceiling of the 3rd floor design studio above bring light into the heart of the building. Photo by Peter MacCallum

Pictured here in just one of its many dramatic views (from the top of the staircase) the Eberhard Zeidler Library is slowly but surely filling its stacks. The new Architecture, Landscape, and Design Library in U of T Daniels is a striking blend of heritage and modern details, with beautiful touches like leafy plants and classical sculptures. See it for yourself at 1 Spadina Crescent.

Today, we meet the new interim Architecture Librarian, Lorissa Kinna! Lorissa is based at the brand new Eberhard Zeidler Library in the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, and she has worked intermittently at #UTL since 2013, first as a student library assistant at the #UCLibrary and Engineering & Computer Science Library, then as the University College Librarian for six months in 2015. In her new role she is responsible for managing the Architecture Library and its staff of two technicians and a number of SLAs. She is also responsible for all the collection development activity for the library as well as liaison and outreach activities with #DanielsFaculty.
Lorissa has a BA in Classical Civilizations from UofT, an M.Litt. in Classics from the University of Glasgow, and an MI in Library Science from UofT.
Lorissa loves to read and to write (when she has time). She also has a lot of hobbies that are crafts-related such as jewelry-making, knitting, and book-folding. She has two “silly kitties” named Mickey and Mera, who were both adopted from the Durham Humane Society, and she says her favourite thing to do in Toronto is attending the Toronto Comic Arts Festival (#TCAF) every year that’s held at the Toronto Reference Library.

Rendering by #UndergraduateStudent Isaac Seah for Architectural Representation II.
Instructor: Dan Briker

About the course: The idea of producing a “realistic” image of an “unbuilt” architectural project has always been associated with the final moment in the #designprocess -- a moment when all #design decisions have already been made. The advancement of new #computation tools has allowed not only for unimaginable levels of realism, but also for higher speeds of production. The image is no longer a static #representation of a finished process, but a fluid component that helps shape the design. This course was developed to investigate and test the potency of imagery, or the “realistic” representation of “unbuilt” architectural design, as a possible method for designing and thinking about #architecture.

Shelley Long’s 2015 Master of Landscape Architecture Thesis — Wilderness & Exodus: The Production of National Landscape — reimagines the Trans-Canada Highway as Canada’s next national park. Her design approach proffers an alternative to current national park design methods, which, she argues, reinforce a binary nature-as-other mentality. Her proposed master plan includes five roadside viewing areas along the highway between Banff National Park and the City of Calgary, transforming the highway into a place for registering new perceptions and experiences of nature. .
