Artistic positions in the Viehof Collection

15 April 2018 at Langen Foundation

The exhibition POLYPHON brings together works by six artists represented in the Viehof Collection: Thomas Houseago, Kimsooja, Danh Vo, Marijke van Warmerdam, Corinne Wasmuht, and David Zink Yi. Differing significantly in their working approaches, themes, and media, the artistic positions encompass painting, sculpture, installation as well as film and video. The exhibition interrelates these independent voices and showcases what the artists have in common: a polyphonic way of thinking and a coming together of cultures and ideas, providing perspective in a global world. Serving as points of departure for the exhibition are the artists’ works, many of which were acquired for the collection at an early stage in the artists’ careers. These are supplemented by current works, some created specially for this exhibition.

The exhibition at the Langen Foundation concentrates on establishing connections between a selection of international positions in recent contemporary art. These are part of a global discourse Central to the exhibition is a questioning of the conditions of human coexistence, a topic the artists approach in various ways. For all participants, this examination concerns the complex nature of identity, understood neither as a finite entity nor a constant, but as something in motion. Thomas Houseago, for instance, transfers his »utopian vision« to the exploration of the sculptural tradition, focusing on the body with his archaic forms and abstractions. In Kimsooja’s performative approach, however, the body becomes the instrument and medium of her artistic practice, which she sees as a way of adding to humanity. This humanistic aspect is echoed in both David Zink Yi’s concept of Independencia and in Marijke van Warmerdam’s »conceptions of time.«

Did you know #DanhVo's “We the People” (2011–16), is a one-to-one replica of the Statue of Liberty in New York? Like the Statue of Liberty, which is a hollow shell, the copper forms of Vo’s replica have the thickness of only two pennies. Yet the three hundred or so individual pieces that make up the artist’s version will never be brought together to form a whole. Vo states that the aim for this project is to “turn something familiar into something very unfamiliar.” Learn more at guggenheim.org/danhvo.
