Airports and Rainstorms.
We landed at JFK in New York a little while in the rain. I enjoy flying - for the most part - and it was an uneventful flight. But as the rain was streaking past the window I started thinking about a story that Michael once shared.
Bill Bottrell and I were with him in the studio, likely around 1990, during the Dangerous project. We spent a lot of time just swapping stories. Some were funny, some were Michael being curious, some were a bit heavy.
I don't remember every topic, but we must have been talking about travel and touring. Michael told us stories about growing up on the road, singing in nasty clubs and having grown women literally throwing themselves at him - as just a young boy. He told us about how much he hated flying, especially when he was younger. Michael went on to tell about one particular flight he was on with his dad and brothers, on one of the J5 tours. This was when air travel was not quite a safe and comfortable as it is today. He described a very loud plane with propellers, flying during a thunderstorm. His voice broke a few times as he told us about flashes of lightning and bouncing of the plane. He told us how he was scared and crying, reaching out for his dad - but Joe just stared straight ahead. One of the flight attendants came and sat next to him and held him in her arms. As he told the story, tears were filling his eyes - as if he was back on that plane.
So even though my landing today in New York was rainy and uneventful, it brings me back to that day in the studio.
I am so excited to returning to Dublin, Ireland this weekend. Michael loved Ireland, and it's not hard to see why. The people are kind and funny and generous. There is music everywhere, mixed with laughter and a love of their culture. Any maybe - there will be rain. And that's OK.
Tickets are still available for my seminar on Saturday, April 21st at Westland Studios. Will You Be There?
