#onlocation: The village name Pago is likely derived from the Chamorro word #pago (pagu), which is the wild hibiscus plant that grows abundantly in this area – known by us in Hawaii as #hau. The bark of this species of hibiscus traditionally was used to make ropes. The combination of river and ocean resources made the area ideal for fishing as well as plant cultivation including yams, taro and mangrove plants. According to #Chamorro #legend, the bay was formed by a giant fish that ate the central part of the island, thus explaining the almost hour glass shape we see today. In the legend, the women of Pago were known to scent and color their hair with lemon peels. When lemon peels were found in neighboring Agana Bay, the women in Agana knew the giant fish had bored an undersea tunnel beneath the island. Eventually, the fish was captured by the Agana women who wove a giant net from their hair. .

Hafa adai! We are incredibly excited to share with you the first #BOSSdancefriend #episode in #Chamorro! What a special treat! The speaker (and translator) is Franck Roberto, a marine lab grad student at the #UniversityofGuam. He spent a lot of time translating this with the help of his family and friends to be able to explain the science in his native tongue. .
#abriefhistory on the Chamorro #language: After the Spanish-American War ended in 1898, #Guam was ceded to America for $20 million, and part of the effort to “assimilate” the Chamorro people to the US way included discouraging the use of the language and even banning fiestas. During WWII, Japan invaded Guam in 1941 and for three years, the Chamorros endured yet another attempt to subjugate their language and culture. When the US liberated the island in 1944 , a grateful Chamorro populace embraced American rule with a fervor that was not seen prior to the war. The Naval governors continued the assimilation policy that still forbade speaking the native language in public places. Many natives became convinced that speaking Chamorro was backward and that speaking English would greatly benefit their children. This created a generation of native Chamorros who speak only English, or speak very little Chamorro. Currently, a renaissance seems to be occurring in which more natives are learning the language - no doubt precipitated by nationalistic leaders, more people attending college, and the creation of the Chamorro Language Commission.

HONOHONONUI AND THE SULFUR CYCLE: Our kupuna named our places very thoughtfully and carefully. One of the first times @labhuiofrank visited @hale_o_lono to do some #microbial sampling in the #sediment, Anakala Kalā and @luka_da_mok told her that the smell of the #mud was very honohono (bad smelling) and this ʻili ʻāina ("strips" of land divisions within an ahupua) was named Honohononui because of that #SMELL. That totally peaked the curiosity – because #sulfur eating and #farting microbes are some of her favorites, and microbial sulfur cycling is her primary area of expertise. What type of microbial information was encoded in that specific name our kupuna chose? Does the ʻili of Honohononui have more of these #sulfide producers (*technical science name = sulfate reducers) or consumers (= sulfide oxidizers) than other ahupuaʻa? Are these gassy #microbes influenced by invasive like honohono grass adding another layer of meaning to the name? Who are these microbes? What is their moʻokuauhau (genelogy, familial relationships) in this place? How do they relate to the moʻolelo of the naming of this place and many of the loko iʻa of this place? .

ʻIKE WAI EPSCoR RESEARCH QUESTIONS: University of Hawaiʻi’s #IkeWaiEPSCoR Project is performing and integrating a cutting edge hydrological #research to assess the current status and predict future senarios for water availability in Hawaiʻi. The mission of ʻIke Wai is to ensure Hawaiʻi’s future #watersecurity through the integration of #research, #education and #engagement of community to develop effective decision support tools that improve water quality, planning and stewardship for the state. Our project aims to answer the following questions: Where does our #water come from? How is #subsurface #geology linked to that water #source? What is the degree of #connectivity between our #aquifers? What is the volume of subsurface #groundwater #discharge along the #coast? And how does #waterquality impact #coastal #ecosystems?

As collaborators on this project, #IHLRT is researching historical and traditional cultural references to groundwater in our two study areas of Pearl Harbor on Oʻahu and Hualālai on Hawaiʻi Island. By researching these historical archives, this work ground us in the Hawaiian worldview of water from the past, provides relevant historical data on the location and flow of wai momona in these areas of study (that can be directly utilized to ground truth hydrological models), provides a road map for how to provide advice on restoration (#kawamamuakawamahope) and humanizes the science by connecting it directly back to ʻāina and moʻokuauhau. We hope to share more wai centric moʻolelo science connections.

METHANE CYCLE: Have you ever stepped into a loʻi and observed bubbles coming up to the surface that DONʻT SMELL? Well that’s #methane. Methane is a gas that is produced by microbes who eat carbon (i.e. dead things, leaf debri etc… ) and fart out methane (cows are also infamous for farting methane and contributing this #greenhouse gas to the atmosphere). While we can utilize methane as a fuel, methane production in a loʻi typically means that the lepo is not well oxygenated, and methane production in a fishpond (while natural in oceanic sediment) typically suggests there is an overload of carbon in the system and low oxygen in the water column. Not suprisingly, fish donʻt like methane as it is toxic to them AND will suffocate them. I found that #waiaholefishpond has the highest amount of methane producing microbes (#methanogens) compared to all the fishponds in the Honohononui/Keaukaha area. This is likely a result of the extensive amount of #invasive plant detritus whose decomposition robs the pond of oxygen and provides the right conditions for (lots of great food, low oxygen) methane producing #microbes. #Restoration efforts by kia'i loko iʻa to remove invasives will have tangible impact on restoring the pond’s ecosystem by mitigating the activities of these microbes.

CORAL BLEACHING: When #corals are stressed by changes in the environment such as temperature, light, or nutrients, they expel the symbiotic algae (#zooxanthellae) living in their tissues, causing them to turn completely white. This is called #coralbleaching. When a #coral bleaches, it is not necessarily dead. Corals can survive a bleaching event, but they are under more stress and are subject to mortality.
.
Dr. Sarah Lemer and Dr. David Combosh’s research programs are integrated with the Guam Ecosystems Collaboratorium's mission - to ensure the #sustainability of #coralreef #ecosystems in the face of environmental change. Their main goal is to identify and characterize the molecular processes that allow some corals to adapt to and survive extreme environmental conditions when others usually #bleach and/or die. They use a combination of genomics and transcriptomic approaches to perform both aquaria and field experiments, and to explore #species #biodiversity and #population connectivity.
.
Assisti i tasi sa i tasi ha guiya hit — care for the ocean as the ocean cares for us
.
#Reefs are really important for a number of reasons. They are economically important. They provide over $127 million a year to Guam’s economy – that’s direct economic benefits. While this includes providing a beautiful destination spot for tourists, the most important “economic” function is that these reef systems provide Guam with #coastalprotection during storms. Without reefs, there would be many more shoreline erosions during storms - as all the waves would come straight onto the beach instead of landing on the reefs first. . 🎶 : Jimmy Dee & The Chamorritas – “Island of Guam” mixed with

HISTORY OF THE BIOSPHERE: Take a #dance journey with #BOSSdancefriends @kiana96734 & @sash_imi2.2 #backintime to explore the #historyoftheEarth @hoouluaina #KKV #KokuaKalihiValley
.
#Earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago (Ga) and there is evidence that life appeared as early as 3.8 Ga. #originoflife. Microbial mats of bacteria and archaea were the dominant form of life on this early Earth. The #evolution of #photosynthesis, around 3.5 Ga, eventually led to a buildup of the toxic waste product, #oxygen, in the atmosphere, leading to the great oxygenation event, beginning around 2.4 Ga – one of the most significant extinction events in our history. The earliest evidence of eukaryotes (complex cells with organelles) dates back to1.85 Ga, and while they may have been present earlier, their diversification accelerated when they started using oxygen in their metabolism. Multicellularity evolved independently in organisms. The initial advantages of #multicellularity included: more efficient sharing of nutrients; increased resistance to predators; the ability to resist currents by attaching to a firm surface; the ability to reach upwards to filter-feed or to obtain sunlight for #photosynthesis; the ability to create an internal environment that gives protection against the external one; and even the opportunity for a group of cells to behave "intelligently" by sharing information. Vertebrates, along with most other modern phyla originated about 525 million years ago (Ma) during the Cambrian explosion. #Dinosaurs dominated the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and once extinct #mammals increased rapidly in size and diversity. Modern humans evolved from a lineage of upright-walking apes that has been traced back over 6 Ma.

Eventually, the fish was captured by the Agana women who wove a giant net from their hair. .

Building bridges and collaborations across the pacific! Excited to build a collab with the the hippest most artistic light-loving microbiologist Dr. @susumu531 on some funktastic #sciart #microbiology #scicomm #danceyoscience awesomeness! Attempting to ho'oulu the next generation of STEM lovers in our respective cultures by innovating the sharing of our work through context specific, place-based, culturally integrated expressions. #microbiologistsUNITE! Mahalo #UHSeaGrant and #AORI for another stimulating joint US/Japan #symposium!

FISHPOND FOODWEBS: Generational assimilation of observational #data enabled Native Hawaiians to preserve a #holistic #understanding of the connectivity, structure and function of #biodiversity within their ahupuaʻa. They understood how the geographic and temporal variability in winds, rains, and currents influenced the life cycles of organisms. They understood who ate who, when and where - and those #kilo practiced helped them to engineer extensive agriculture and aquaculture systems (like loʻi and loko iʻa) to grow #food and #feed their #communities. A keen understanding of the #marine #foodweb enables our kiaʻi loko iʻa to restore and promote the #productivity of these systems. Amazing #educational programs like #Koolauainamomona foster inquiry and build this type of #ecologicalknowledge within our keiki to hoʻoulu a generation of ʻāina-based practitioners. We often ignore the importance of the #microbes in these webs, as we canʻt see them, but it is clear that our kupuna recognized the importance of these invisible entities to the function of our ecosystems – and the #keikikoolau had no trouble seeing that connection. #KAM2017
