Getting a feel for your salsa basics? Here's how to transition between your side basic and front-back basic (On1).

Salsa basics: How to switch from a closed to an open hold and from a back basic into a front-back basic.

To smoothly transition from a closed hold to an open hold, slowly create space between yourself and your partner as you trace your arm down the follow's. Anchor to begin your back basic and then notice how Patrick passes over the middle on count 7 to signal he wants to go back into the front-back basic. Showing your intention is everything!

MOST RECENT

Copa On1. Here's the basic Copa using one of the most common crossed handholds to start and the Free Spin as an exit. Did you know Copa means "cup" in spanish?
-
👦 Leads, timing, arm position and catching her hip are key on this one. Try not to let her over rotate as she goes into the copa - it's not a full half turn like in the change of place. Make sure you stop her by the hip on 3 and send her back on "and-5" for the exit.
-
👧 Follows, likewise, don't over rotate in the copa (unless the lead makes you do it by accident, of course). You should only have done a quarter turn by 3 as he stops you and sends you back. Why only a quarter turn? Because of where he places your arms! Your arms and hands are your roadmaps, square up to them and keep your frame!
-
🎬 This one is tricky to learn. If you need a hand sign up for our full instructional lessons at TheDanceDojo.com or try a sample lesson first - link in bio!

Tomorrow we'll show you the Copa in a combo full of inside snd outside turn variations! ✌

The Wrap On1. This one's juicy, or maybe it just gets me excited because it sounds like food! Either way there's lots of directions you can take this inside turn variation.
-
👦 Leads, its like leading and inside turn or free spin from her left hand. Keep your arm low and it'll wrap her up. Remember the turn doesn't actually happen until 6. She's prep'd on the 5 and you initiate it on the "and-6". Let her step forward on the 1 as you "check" her (check = change of direction) and pull her back on the "and-2".
-
👧 Follows, keep your time and keep stepping forward as you turn (not sideways or backwards!) with feet turned out slightly. Don't be confused when he gives you the check. Keep stepping on beat. You're in good hands - he'll guide you 😉

Once you get this one down play with the handhold variations and ways you exit the move - play time! ✌

Handshake Combo On1. Lets take that Semi Circle you saw yesterday and put it to work!
-
Start with a right turn for the follows, then a right turn for the fellas, a left turn for the follows and finish with the semi circle.
-
👦 Leads, take your time on those turns and stay on time. When you raise your arm for the semi circle don't begin the lead early. The impulse is on 5.
-
👧 Follows, always be ready. Look for his hand (the target) if he offers it so you can smoothly flow into the next move. Keep your core and legs connected when you turn so you rotate as a single solid and stable unit.

Hasta mañana chicos ✌

Semi Circle On1. Here we have a fun variation of an outside turn. We'll show it to you here first by itself and then in a pattern.
-
👦 Leads, raise your arm and swoop it down to create an impulse that initiates the turn, on 5. You don't need to continuously crank your partner's arm throughout the turn - that would feel no bueno and it's unnecessary! Start it and let her finish.
-
👧 Follows, never assume or guess what he's going to do. If your follow technique is on point (and he leads semi well) there's no need to be a fortune teller. Keep your posture, frame, relax your arms and stay tight to turn your body as one solid unit. We have technique workshops to help in all these areas on our site.

Next up we'll show you the semi cirlce in a pattern we call "Handshake". Deal? ✌

The Free Spin On1. You see this inside turn all the time. It's a great way to give the ladies a little space for a moment or send them into shines during the motuno section.
-
👦 Leads, despite what it looks like you don't want to crank her arm and try and make her spin. Simply guide her forward and a slight suggestion should do the trick.
-
👧 Follows, if your doing your swive techniques (body movement / figure 8s with your hips as you walk) you'll always be prep'd to turn and with just a slight suggestion he can initiate your rotation. If you dont't swivel he has to use more force to initiate. Nail your swivels! They are so key for progressing as an intermediate dancer.

Mariposa combo On1. Let's take those right turns and inside turns you already know and add in the tow truck we showed you yesterday. You'll notice these moves are variations of the basic version we've shown you before.
-
👦 Leads, you,re going to hijack her inside turn and bring her back towards you. Don't rush it though. Make sure she can step forward before you bring her back. You also don't need to lead her swivels. This is a body movement technique she does on her own. Finish it off with a tow truck and use your right hand to catch her tummy.
-
👧 Follows, take your time and stay on time. Learn those body movent techniques (hint: we teach them on our site) to enhance your walk/hips/swivels. Why? When you swivel and weight your steps correctly you're prepared for anything at any moment. If not, you limit the lead's options significantly. It also just looks 👌 too 😉

Tow Truck On1. You've surely seen this move in many forms. Let's take a look at this basic version.
.
.
👦 Leads, when you initiate the move keep her hands in front of her. This lets her know she should stay straight. Then lift them gently overhead. You can lead this move from a variety of handholds and the principal remains the same.
.
.
👧 Follows, your hands are your roadmaps. If he keeps them in front of you stay straight. If he lifts them directly over your head without moving them in a circle or "halo," to give you a spin, then this is neutral. Don't lead yourself into a turn!
.
.
✔ This move is a great test to see if each of you are following the rules of lead and follow. It takes some practice!

El Arco On1. It's time for some more practice with the Pull Through. You'll get it in it's simplest form first and then you'll do the second one with an open break. Feel and see the difference?
-
-
👦 Lead's take your time on the pull throughs. Let her come to you. Try and make a nice open break connection before the second pull through and be at a right angle to your partner to make your lead clearer.
-
-
👧 Follows, work your basic techniques and body movement. Don't guess how he's going to exit the pull throughs or what's coming next because, well, you can't! Technique over fortune telling! 🔮

The Cross Body Open (CBO) On1. This variation of the cross body lead is the secret sauce to making your transitions and moves more elastic and dynamic. Tomorrow we'll take the CBO and combine it with the Pull Through and you'll see exactly what we mean.
-
-
👦 Leads, instead of following up with your partner on the cross body let her keep going and step into an open (back) break instead, to create that elastic connection.
-
-
👧 Follows, you'll notice your partner isn't coming towards you like usual so don't take a big step back on1 when you finish the cross body. Instead, anchor yourself in place, take a tiny step back, or in place, and be ready to progress and propel yourself forward. What goes out must come back in!

The Pull Through On1. Now that we've shown you some combos it's time to get back to learning building blocks to expand your horizons. The Pull Through is a pretty sweet and versatile move, as we'll show you in the coming days! 👀
-
-
👦 Leads, lift that right arm to make the tunnel for her to walk through. Be patient with the right arm. It simply drops dowm and settles once she walks past it - no need to hurry or flail to lower it 😉
-
-
👧 Follows, strut the shit out of this one and keep your weight on the foot you're stepping on. Don't get caught being back-weighted on your back foot. That limits what you're able to follow and do next. And that's no fun!
-
-
❓ Is the guy supposed to lead those swivels as she walks?
-
❓ How does Scarlet make those swivels look so damn good?
-
❓Is there a functional purpose for walking like that? 🤔

Around the World On1. This a fun little beginner combo that's not too difficult but has a nice dynamic feel to it. Let's see what happens when we take the revolving style of ochos and combine it with some basic right turns.
-
-
👦 Leads, stand tall and keep your posture. Give her the line of dance as you walk around on the rails and keep facing forward. The movement of your body revolving around hers is what initiates that final right turn, like walking backwards through a turnstile. Just have your hand up to give her an axis.
-
-
👧 Follows, likewise if you keep your posture and frame you'll go along for the ride on this one. By keeping your frame you'll automatically rotate into the final right turn as he moves around you. Always stay squared up, facing the direction he holds your arms/frame.

♫ Vente Negra - Habana con Kola

Siesta Swoop beginner combo On1. Let's have some more fun with right turns shall we? We'll use a little arm swoop and your cumbia basic to switch things up.
-
-
👦 Leads, step to the side to about 2 O'clock to make that swoop smooth and comfortable for both you and your partner.
-
-
👧 Follows, don't worry or overthink... "
'I've never done it this way before. It feels different' Just follow the signals he gives you by maintaining your posture and frame.
-
But hold on...
-
❓ How do I know when it's my turn to turn or his?
-
❓ Why do i feel like I want to do a double turn when he swoops his arm?
-
❓ Why am I having trouble following this? I swear I'm keeping my frame!

The Loopy Waiter combo On1. This one also uses the right and left turn, and then adds two new elements to keep things interesting: an arm toss and a cross body lead with an open break to finish.
-
-
👦 Leads, relax that arm on the right turn when it goes into the "waiter" position. Your elbow does a high arc so it doesn't hit her face (pretty key). Make sure you finish the hand toss in time for her to step forward and prep for that left turn and the rest is gravy.
-
-
👧 Follows, it's always just the basics for you. They are E V E R Y T H I N G !
Don't let the hand toss throw you off. Relax and allow him to move your arm. Smile 😊

Hammerlock Unwind On1. This beginner combo shows you how to have some fun with just two elements, the right and left turn. It's simple yet interesting.
-
-
👦 Leads, start with a handshake hold and turn her right into a hammerlock. Give her a gentle airbrush and then simply reverse it using your left turn. Don't rush the start of the left turn - let her step forward so she's prep'd.
-
-
👧 Follows, relax your arms as he turns you into the hammerlock. Tension makes things difficult. Be aware of your steps and posture because that's where your timing and balance comes from. Turns come in many variations, so be open to the different handholds or leads your partner may use - from the hip, from the shoulder etc!

Everyone to the Right (Combo On1). You've got the Cross Body Lead and the Right Turn down. Now try taking just these 2 moves and see what fun you can have! It's all about variations.
-
-
👦Leads, learning the footwork for the right turn isn't just for the follows. You'll need it here too! On your final right turn, as you hammerlock yourself, hike your arm as far up your back as you can. It will make ducking down easier and you won't head butt your partner.
-
-
👧 Follows, take your time, stay on time and put all your basic skills to the test here. Stand tall with good posture and when he ducks under give him a little bridge (space) with your hand/arm so you don't awkwardly hit him in the head 😂

The Rejection On1. This move adds a little fun to the cross body lead with a hook turn for the fellas. And don't take it personally ladies, it's just a name 😁
-
-
👦 Leads, stand tall and keep your posture as you do the hook turn. If you're on time you've got all the time in the world.
-
-
👧 Follows, it's an easy breezey cross body lead for you. He's not coming toward you at the end of thd cross body lead, so anchor yourself, don't keep stepping back.
