D A M N
By: Kendrick Lamar
One thing I love about Kendrick's music is that every album he completely changes his style. He's goes from the jazz infused, surreal To Pimp a Butterfly to this introspective ambitious project. Un-surprisingly it's a solid album, but it's a bit of a mixed bag.
Tracks like DNA. , HUMBLE. , And ELEMENT. are some of Kendrick's angriest grimiest raps, while tracks like PRIDE. , LUST and FEEL. are some of his most haunting. The production on this album features some of the strangest, most interesting rap beats I've ever heard. He delves into what I would call "psychedelic rap" Kendrick throws out a ton of crazy verses on almost every track.
The idea of an album that sort of starts and ends in the same way is quite interesting. The album hints that you can also listen to the album in reverse, By reversing the track order. This order gives the album a completely different feeling. There are also TWO more ways to listen to the album that dramatically change the listening experience, "The Damned Man" and "The Saved Man" as I like to call them.
The whole album felt pretty unfocused at certain points. I can see what Kendrick was trying to do with this album, but it honestly doesn't quite completely work out. There are some negatives to this album. The tracks GOD., LOYALTY. ,and LOVE. Are pretty underwhelming.
Favorite Tracks: FEAR. , DUCKWORTH. , PRIDE.
Least Favorite: GOD.
