I have loved following these 3 dairy girls from @nyfarmgirls for awhile. But after I saw this post earlier this week, I knew I wanted to share them as my #farmertofollow! Head over to @nyfarmgirls
and show them some love. And check out their thoughts on "factory farms". 👇

#Repost from @nyfarmgirls with @regram.app ... What is a factory farm to you? Do they even exist? 🤷🏽‍♀️
We’ve been called a “factory farm,” multiple different times. So if loving, nurturing, and doing anything in your power to keep your animals safe and comfortable is what factory farming is...then..hmm.. all us dairy farmers are “factory farmers” !!!! 🐮
With 97% of US farms being family owned I’m confused how so many of us are ‘heartless’ factory farmers. Maybe factory dairy farming should be seen as a good thing since the animals seem to be pretty happy on ours 💁🏽‍♀️
💙
Tell us- what is factory farming to you? Or is it a term made up by those who are uneducated and want a negative vibe around our industry? Let’s make it a way to positively educate! 🙌🏽

Ensuring A Healthy And Profitable Calf
.
- In order to ensure a healthy and profitable calf, it is vital to have a well-managed feeding program for the calves. Besides sufficient amount of water, colostrum and milk replacer, it is important to have calf starter as part of the calf's diet after birth.
.
- When calves are born, they do not have a functioning rumen. As such, it is critical that a calf starter is fed 1 -3 days after birth. To properly develop the calf's rumen, the fermentation from water and feed are needed. Therefore, by delaying the calf starter intake, it will delay rumen growth. This will ultimately prolonged the age where calves can be weaned.
.
- As a start, offer the calves feed with a handful of starter calf. As the calves start to eat the feed, it is a good idea to offer more of the starter until they are eating as much as they desire. With that being said, try to not overfill the feed bucket because calves have a habit of licking the bottom of the feed bucket while they are eating. By not overfilling the feed bucket, it will also help to prevent the feed from being stale.
.
- It is also very importer to check the calf starter everyday to ensure that they are clean and fresh. If spoiled grains are found, remove them immediately. It is a good practice to have a divider between the feed bucket and water or milk bucket to prevent the feed from getting wet. A good quality calf starter with at least 20% protein should be fed to the calf. Besides that, ensure that the calves have access to clean and fresh water all the time.

Isn’t she a beauty ♥️ This heifer was born a few days ago and is the first calf out of Jagoda. Still waiting on her name...My bosses wife is from Poland, and we’ve got a few cow families that are all polish names, thanks to her 😁 Does anyone reading speak or understand Polish? 🤔

Importance of Veterinarian-Client-Patient-Relationship
.
1. Health and protocol recommendations
.
• A VCPR will allow a veterinarian to treat your animals and encourages you to be open for consultation and advice from your veterinarian.
.
• Your veterinarian should be familiar with your operation, your herd and the individual animals in order to help you create treatment protocols tailored to your needs.
.
• Your veterinarian is also the export in choosing the right products that will prevent disease and can provide best advice for treatment of any disease.
.
2) Maintaining regular visits and communication
.
• You and your veterinarian should maintain relationship through regular visits and communication.
.
• Your veterinarian needs to visit often enough to have a good knowledge of your operations, including information about the care of your animals, what products are being used, level of disease and prevention in place.
.
3) Complying with regulations
.
• Your veterinarian would be in the best position to help you prevent residues and can provide oversight of treatments and compliance.
.
• As the owner, you would be responsible for following and making sure your employees comply with your veterinarian's instruction for treatment.
.
• Training needs to be conducted to help your employees understand why following protocol is crucial.
.
4) Documentation
.
• It is encouraged to have a signed document acknowledging that a VCPR exists between you and your veterinarian and that you agree to follow the instructions of your veterinarian.
.
5) Commitment from you and your veterinarian
.
• It takes effort from both sides to establish and maintaining a VCPR.
.
• Veterinarians are responsible to help you protect and increase performance for your herd but at the same time, as a producer, you have the responsibility to follow the veterinarian's instruction.

Hey!Oats! that’s my hand! #handschmand #dairycalf #4hproject #montana

Feeding these guys has become a full contact sport. Tag team style. These fine holders not only save me from some 150lbs of hangry calves, it also frees me up! That’s an additional 30-40 minutes a day! Woo hoo!! Merry Christmas to me. I may just throw them on our wish list just in case. These hungry hippos may break them 😳

Collecting Heifer Data To Improve Herd Performance
.
Here are some tips on collecting heifer data:
.
1) Gathering baseline numbers
.
Measure the weights and hip heights during:
.
• Birth
.
• Weaning
.
• 4 - 6 months
.
2) Setting goals
.
Compare the weights and heights of your herd to the industry standards. Does your herd meet or exceed those benchmarks?
.
If it does not meet the benchmark, it is important to find out why and rectify such problems.
.
3) Measuring progress
.
It is important to evaluate goals regularly. If it is not possible to monitor for all heifers, focus on the youngest one.
.
It is also crucial not to overlook evaluating:
.
• Treatment costs
.
• Mortality rate
.
• Heifer pregnancy rate
.
• First lactation milk production
.
4) Calculating success
.
It is important to evaluate the data collected to find out how successful is your heifer raising program over time. Is the cost per pound of weight gain getting less? Can you improve the current results?

My little Cutiepie is such a cutiepie! #cutiepie #babycalf #cutecalf #ilovecalves #loveher #dairycalf #dairyfarm

So today some older calves were getting moved to group pens and one of the calves slipped through the pen and decided to go for a little run around by the younger calves. Thankfully she is a pretty friendly calf, so I was able to get her to come to me by clicking at her. She just trotted right up to me. Her coming up to me made it 100% easier putting her back in her pen haha.

4 Ways To Ensure A Positive Environment For Your Cows
.
Cow Comfort
. • Cow comfort is the priority. Cows must be happy in order to produce best quality milk. Hence, it is crucial to ensure beds are clean and comfortable at all times.
.
Rumination, Milk Production & Crowding
.
• Studies showed that a lactating cow will chew her cud on average 400 - 600 minutes per day.
.
• Monitoring the rumination of the cow is a good way to gauge the cow's well being.
.
• Overcrowding tend to reduce rumination time, which in turns reduce milk production.
.
• Hence, it is crucial to provide adequate space for the cows at the bunk.
.
Nutritional Attentiveness
.
• Ensure that there is ration consumption for the cows following milking as they need to consume sufficient nutrients for high milk production.
.
• Water should be clean and accessible at all times for the cows. It will also increase dry matter consumption for the cows.
.
• It is encouraged to clean, dry and scrub the water troughs at least once a week, if not daily.
.
• It is also important for the farmers to be aware of the economic impacts of their practices and manage outside influences such as birds in order to make sure that the animals are healthy and have sufficient nutrients.
.
Consistency
.
• Cows are creature of habits.
.
• Farmers should work towards being consistent in their practice.
.
• Pay attention towards the cow's comfort, rumination and nutrition.
.
• Remember, a happy and healthy cow will produce high quality milk.

We calve in the fall/winter in Texas cause the summers are too hot, and the only snow we have to deal with is light dustings of hay chaff.

Today we bedded all of our barns with fodder, to keep our livestock warm and dry during this cold week ❄️ Our freestall barn is only bedded with sand and lime, but we close the curtains and doors to keep our ladies as comfortable as possible ❤️ I also gave extra straw bedding to all of our calves in the calf barn. During these cold spells it’s important that we keep our animals as warm as we can to keep them comfortable, so we don’t mind the extra work to keep them happy 😁 The barn pictured above is our solar barn, which is where we keep most of our young heifers. If we get overcrowded, and they aren’t old enough to breed (15 months) we will send them over to our other farm until they are breeding age.

Benefits Of Keeping Fresh Group Small.
.
Smaller group size post calving reduces competition
.
• When a cow is introduced to a new group, she will typically encounter aggression from other cows and may face problems accessing feed and freestalls due to competition.
.
• In a smaller group, existing cows in the group will be less inclined to show aggressive behavior to establish dominance.
.
• This will reduce the competition among cows and allows the new cow to have a smoother transition to a new group.
.
• It is also encouraged to only move the cows to new group after they had a chance to feed at their normal feeding time to reduce aggression.
.
Cows take time to transition to new fresh pen
.
• Regardless of group size, it is found that cows had the lowest feed intake and lying time on the day they were moved into fresh pen compared with the next few days.
.
• The low fed intake and low lying time on the first day showed that it is crucial to have ample resources - feeding and lying space available to the cows during the first day of moving to a new group.
.
• Since fresh cows nee more rest to recover from labor, understocking combined with small group sizes will help ensure fresh cows are getting sufficient lying time.
.
Designing your fresh pen around the cow
.
• Studies have shown that there is a need to think about fresh pen or any pen a cow is entering soon after giving birth, from the perspective of the cow.
.
• The cow has recently undergone a painful labor and is trying her best to navigate in a new social environment which may affect her feed intake and rest.
.
• Having smaller fresh pen where the cows can adapt to new environment before entering large pen is one way to help the cows cope with their struggles during the transition.
