Square Dance - Official Washington State Dance
Yes, an official dance. Washington designated the square dance as the official State dance in 1979. The Square Dance was first documented in 16th century England. It came to North America with the European settlers. The dance provided pioneers with recreation and social contact with neighbors and still does to this day. Western American square dance is most widely known due to its association with the image of the American cowboy. 22 states have designated square dance as their official dance.
I almost didn’t post this picture because I thought it looked goofy. Instead I reminded myself this is a creative challenge and not a fine art exhibit. Trupti, another artist said, “Practice makes progression”. So true!
