#dailyauddity

MOST RECENT

And lo, we've reached the end of my #dailyauddity stream! In a poetic flourish, I'd like to present (again) your two favorite weirdos, in 2017 and today. It's hard to believe that this has been going for an entire year!

I had so much fun with the #dailyauddity project. Looking for beautiful images every day, researching random facts, and writing up engaging captions was a fun (sometimes stressful) way to close out my evenings. Even if I went past midnight PST, I always managed to make the post before 12am in Hawaii 😉

Thanks to everyone who followed along on this journey and made it that much more enjoyable! I've always believed that stories and context help enhance our appreciation of an image, and I hope these daily posts have helped showcase that. •
Power on. Happy New Year. Let's go, 2018!

Happy New Year from Seattle! 🎆 •

Shibori includes a form of tie-dye from Japan and Indonesia, where it has been practiced since at least the 8th century. Mudmee tie-dye originates in Thailand and neighboring part of Laos. It uses different shapes and colors from other types of tie-dye, and the colors are, in general, more subdued. Another difference is that the base color is black.

A bookworm's paradise!
Powell's City of Books covers a full city block and its inventory for retail and online sales is over four million new, used, rare, and out-of-print books. Powell's buys ~3,000 used books per day.

At $25,000 this is the most expensive set of books in the Rare Books Room.

"This is the first published edition of Lewis and Clark's journals. The originals are part of the collection at the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia. This copy was one of 1,417 copies printed in 1814. Approximately 23 copies are known to survive today, with very few in private hands. They were edited by Nicholas Biddle, who turned their journal entries into an artful narrative.
More journals were found at a later date, and subsequent published editions contain more volumes. The present-day edition of these journals contains 13 volumes, including an atlas."

A glimpse of Shasta Lake while en route to our first stop in Ashland, Oregon (where theater rules and ramen sucks (seriously))

Lake Shasta is the largest manmade reservoir in California, forming as a result of the Shasta Dam. It was built for long-term water storage, flood control, and hydroelectricity, however it has also had severe negative impacts on the ecology of the Sacramento River, and flooded sacred Native American tribal lands. •

The dam prevents salmon migration up the river to the Upper Sacramento, Pit, McCloud and other tributary streams. The warmer water in the reservoir is also detrimental to salmon, steelhead, and wild California trout. •
The dam submerged the lands of the Winnemem Wintu, considered a ghost tribe because they are not federally recognized. Pre-colonization, the tribe numbered 14,000; by 1900, they were reduced to 395. Of the men who survived, many fought in the U.S. armed forces during World War II. When they returned in 1945, they found their families displaced and 90% of their traditional land lost to the rising lake.

Verdigris perhaps (I haven't tried soaking it in distilled water or acetone yet) on this 20 pence coin from 1982. •

Verdigris is a common name for a green pigment or patina that develops when copper is processed with acetic acid, or when copper, brass, or bronze is weathered and exposed to the elements. It's desirable on statues and architecture for color and protection, but not desirable on coins. Chemicals that don't damage the coin won't remove the verdigris, but chemicals that don't damage the coin won't stop it. •

Judging from the scattered green spots on all the other coins in this pile (Columbia to Aruba, Lebanon to Greece, Indonesia to Denmark, and a few NYC transit tokens) I've got a lot of soaking to do.

The slightly unfamiliar-looking Hachiya! In stores, you'll more often see the squat, sweet, tannin-free Fuyu variety. •

"Shaped like an acorn and about the size of a medium peach, the Hachiya persimmon has shiny, bright orange skin. It is extremely astringent until it is so soft that the flesh can be eaten like a pudding. When soft-ripe, the skin dulls and Hachiya persimmons become incredibly sweet."

Ripe Hachiya can be used in bread and cookies. I've yet to try any myself, but with access to an endless supply (via the massive tree in the front yard), the possibilities and experiments are limitless!

Black walnut rootstock with an English walnut crown 👑 •

English walnut (Juglans regia), aka Persian walnut, is popular for its large seeds. It's often grafted onto California black walnut (Juglans hindsii) to help provide anchorage, vigor, and resistance to soil borne diseases.

Other plants often don't grow under walnut trees because the fallen leaves and husks contain juglone, a natural herbicide that impedes transpiration and photosynthesis. Horses that eat walnut leaves may develop laminitis, aka founder. On the flip side, juglone is also being studied for its cancer-fighting properties.

One day, when I grow up 🤤

Rolleiflex 2.8 TLR with a Schneiderman Xenotar lens

TLR stands for "twin lens reflex"
Twin lens, because there are two lenses. Reflex, meaning the photographer looks through the lens to view the reflected image of the subject on the focusing screen. This is done through the upper or “viewing” lens. The lower lens, aka the “taking” lens, sits in front of the film plane, and captures the image. •

Unlike the more commonplace SLR (single lens reflex), the TLR has a stationary mirror. The lack of a moving mirror means lower vibration, which is advantageous for slower handheld shooting. The viewfinder also doesn’t go dark during the moment of exposure, so you can see exactly what's been captured. It’s also quieter than the sound of an SLR firing.

Of the 270 million cluster munitions the US dropped on Laos, one-third did not explode, according to the Lao National Regulatory Authority for UXO. Over 20,000 people have been killed or injured since the bombings ended -- most are farmers, who work the land, and children, who mistake bombs for toys.

The only place this was a "secret war" was in the US. For the Laotians who suffered the heaviest bombardment in history, the campaign was certainly not a secret. America’s involvement was also covered in the international press, becoming well publicized, and was even investigated by Congress. But the “secret” label stuck in part because of official denials and in part because of public indifference. •

In 2016, President Obama became the first US president to visit Laos. He acknowledged the US's moral responsibility to helping clear those UXOs, and announced $90 million over the next 3 years to supporting that effort.

Laos, 1964 - 1973: The Secret War is waged by the US to halt the spread of communism across Indochina.
The US drops 250 - 260 million bombs on a country smaller than California -- that's 1 B-52 plane every 8 minutes, of every day, for 9 years

In the ensuing years, Lao villagers cast spoons from the scrap metal scattered in their fields. Article22 followed up in 2009 by launching Project Peacebomb. This partnership with local Lao artisans and Swiss NGO, Helvetas, resulted in the first bomb metal bracelets.
Each bracelet purchased clears 3 sq meters of bomb littered Lao land. •

I'm not generally big on jewelry, but I love my family's history, and any connection back to it. Learning about the good and the bad, the tragic and victorious moments is important in understanding where you come from. Huge thanks to my sister for this beautiful and thoughtful gift ❤️

Death on the current (Specifically if you're pretty much any variety of zooplankton, crustacean, salp, pelagic snail, small fish as well as their eggs and larvae, or other jellyfish). •

Chrysaora fuscescens, aka Pacific Sea Nettle, can grow to be over 3 ft in diameter, with its white oral arms and maroon tentacles trailing up to 15 feet behind the bell. • •
The origin of the genus name Chrysaora lies in Greek mythology with Chrysaor, brother of Pegasus and son of Poseidon and Medusa. Translated, Chrysaor means “he who has a golden armament.”

In school we learned that leaves turned red and yellow in the winter because chlorophyll (which reflects green light) breaks down and lets carotene and xanthophyll (which reflect red and yellow) steal the show. •

Did you also know that chlorophyll is also registered as a food additive (colorant)? It's E number is E140. Chefs use chlorophyll to color a variety of foods and beverages green, such as pasta and absinthe. Chlorophyll is not soluble in water, and it is first mixed with a small quantity of vegetable oil to obtain the desired solution.

Pacific sardines swarming in front of our 90 foot window into the Open Sea.
This exhibit is the aquarium's biggest and mimics life in the open ocean.

Last year, federal fishery managers banned almost all sardine fishing within 200 miles off West coast for the second year in a row. The pacific sardine population has plummeted by 90% since 2007, causing massive damage to brown pelican and sea lion populations.
With their mothers gone for long periods of time in search of food, starving sea lion pups have been found washed up on local beaches. •

Chowtime!

One of the tallest aquatic exhibits in the world, the Kelp Forest brings you 28 feet deep, putting you at eye level with sardines, leopard sharks, and wolf-eels -- oh my!

Circling below the diver (and with another in the background) there are two leopard sharks -- one of the most common sharks in California. Their silvery-bronze skin is patterned with rows of dark ovals. The spots develop increasingly pale interiors as the shark ages, thus creating leopard-like patterns across the sharks' backs 🦈 •

Meditative moments in the barber's seat

In addition to the appeal of a ritual, using straight razors reduces the incidence of ingrown hairs and bumpy, irritated skin, and saves money and resources in the long run.

A straight razor exposes your skin to a single sharp blade, whereas modern safety razors use up to 5 blades, causing more irritation with every pass. Those additional blades may also drag at the stubble or cut the shaft too far below the skin, causing ingrown hairs, particularly for those with curly hair. •

Cared for properly, a single straight razor can last for decades, and even be passed down. Contrast this with the average shaver who would need to spend thousands of dollars on safety razors and refills (even with the cheapest cartridges available) over the course of a lifetime, and who would also be creating a tremendous amount of waste in the process.

Somewhere over the Northwestern Passages (probably) deep in Nunavut ❄️

Canada is the second largest country in the world, at 9,984,670 sq km (3,855,103 sq miles). Nunavut is its biggest territory, containing 21% of Canada within its 2,093,190 sq km (808,185 sq miles). •

I'd love to explore Nunavut's vast expanses of ice, tundra, craggy mountains, and remote villages, accessible only by plane or boat. The territory is known for its indigenous Inuit people's artwork, carvings and handmade clothing. Inuit art is displayed at the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum in the capital, Iqaluit, on Baffin Island.

I miss the snow outside my window (and this old English holly tree - Ilex aquifolium) ❄️

Since holly retains its glossy leaves and vibrant 'berries' (actually drupes -- meaning stone fruit) through winter, it's no surprise it was an important symbol through time and across religions. •

Ancient Romans decorated with holly during Saturnalia (celebrating the god Saturn, with drunken revelry and role reversals), and the Druids of ancient Gaul wore wreaths and sprigs of them to sacred events, and saw them as a form of protection against evil spirits. Christianity adopted some of this same emphasis as it spread, with some seeing the holly leaves as symbolic of Christ's crown of thorns and the drupes as drops of blood.

The drupes are mildly toxic to humans, causing vomiting and diarrhea. But the leaves of some Ilex species can be used for tea, such as Yerba mate (I. paraguariensis) -- one of my favorites!

Loved seeing The Last Jedi tonight along with 100+ happy fans and some of my favorite people ❤️

In honor of tonight, here's the original Chewbacca head worn by Peter Mayhew in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977). Designed and made by Stuart Freeborn.

"To form the foundation of the Chewbacca costume head, Stuart Freeborn created a foam latex mask over a resin mold of Peter Mayhew's face. Chewbacca's fur -- a blend of yak and human hair -- was glued onto the latex face mask and woven into a knit wool lining that covered Mayhew's head and neck." #starwars #chewbacca #dailyauddity

Little lichen life 🔍

Lichens aren't plants -- they're actually composite organisms that result from algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi in a symbiotic relationship. •

The fungi benefit from the carbohydrates produced by the algae or cyanobacteria via photosynthesis. The algae or cyanobacteria benefit by being protected from the elements by the filaments of the fungi, which also gather moisture and nutrients from the environment, and (usually) provide an anchor to it.

The most common growth forms include tiny, leafless branches (fruticose), flat leaf-like structures (foliose), or flakes that lie on the surface like peeling paint (crustose). Lichen don't have roots that absorb water and nutrients as plants do, but they can still produce their own food by photosynthesis. When they grow on plants, they aren't parasitic, but instead use the plants as a substrate.
