Cypress Gardens was a botanical garden, planted by Dick Pope Sr. & his wife, that opened on January 2, 1936. It was coined the "Water Ski Capital of the World" and quickly became Florida's first commercial tourist theme park. The park would be host to visitors, film crews and water sport enthusiasts alike. .
Cypress Gardens found themselves competing for guests when Walt Disney Resort opened in 1971. The park would change hands a few times in the years following and eventually would close on April 13, 2003. CG would never fully recover and on January 15, 2010, Merlin Entertainments purchased CG and built the 5th Legoland on the property. A portion of Cypress Gardens was saved and added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 14, 2014. .
