#flashbackfriday

I did a surgical volunteer rotation in Nepal a couple years ago where I both learned a new surgical skill and taught one. I spent one week in Tilganga Eye Hospital, the largest eye hospital in Nepal, in Kathmandu, and followed by a week at Geta Eye Hospital in Dhangadi, western Nepal.
I had previously only been to Nepal as a climber, trekking Everest Base Camp, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience coming back as a surgeon. I learned a surgical technique called MICS (micro incision cataract surgery) which is useful for the very dense cataracts that many of the patients in Nepal have. Since most patients in Nepal do not have access to phacoemulsficiation (the standard technique in western countries) and since their cataracts are a lot more advanced and dense by the time they undergo cataract surgery, this technique is widely used there. It has also been useful on several occasions back in the USA as well.

Most eye hospitals in Nepal have support from the incredible Himalayan Cataract Project, started by Geoff Tabin from University of Utah and Sanduk Ruit, a Nepalese ophthalmologist, and these hospitals were no exception. If you have not heard about their incredible organization, look into #cureblindess and #HCP (Himalayan Cataract Project). This is my post-op Day #1 patient from a MICS cataract surgery whom I am examining before he heads home on an 8 hour journey back to his village.
