This one has an unusual detail. This is the Saint Columba altarpiece by Rogier van der Weyden. It contains all the usual elements for a 15th century Adoration of the Magi. We see the Virgin and Child, the ruins of the house of David, the three Wise Men, the ox and donkey. One element I haven’t mentioned before is the references to the Passion. In many Adoration scenes you can find elements that relate to later parts of Jesus’ life and the Passion, but in this case that reference is truly strange. Just above the Virgin and Child there is a Crucifix on the wall. You would think these were not yet available right after His birth wouldn’t you? You can see this altarpiece in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
