The message of the cross is what makes Christianity unique: That our God, rather than punish us for our sins, chose to sacrifice His only begotten Son for our sakes.
Love in Christianity isn't a feeling or emotion. It is deeply rooted in sacrifice. Our Lord has shown us the only way to truly love, and that is to lay down your life for your friend.
If you give up all you have - time, talent, treasure - for your neighbour, you are a Christian. Anything short of that is just showmanship. You cannot claim to be Christlike and not be willing to give out your money to those who need it more than you, give your time to those who need a listening ear, and use your talent to build the church; all the while, expecting nothing in return.
Anything short of sacrifice is showmanship, not love.
