Protein Balls or Carbohydrate Balls?
Increasingly, we find 'healthy', 'natural' "protein" snacks appearing on our shelves, capitalising on the growth fitness and nutrition markets. I'm not about to go in to the whys and wherefores of protein vs carbohydrate, or any health benefits of such snacks. However, I'd like to understand how this (and MANY other brands) like it are able to be heavily marketed as a "protein" snack.
Take a look at the ingredients. Per 45g serving (1 bag), we find 22.1g Carbs (19 from Sugar) and 5.8g Protein. That's apparently 22% of the recommend intake for carbs and only 12% of the RI for protein. Again, I'm not debating whether or not those values are right or wrong. I would like to know the legal side of this.
How can a product with over 3 times as much sugar as protein be marketed as a Protein Snack? Certainly, it has "added protein" but it is not a protein-dominant snack and should not be labelled as such.
This is extremely disingenuous and downright cynical marketing.
So, for those seeking to supplement their health pursuits, do take care. Read the labels and know what you are eating.
