No #twentiethcentury american #literarycharacter has penetrated the public consciousness like #VladimirNabokov's #Lolita. The #MerriamWebster dictionary defines her name as a noun: “a precociously seductive girl.” The novel in which the duo is trying to outrun the past to find a future that doesn't exist is filled with wordplay, hidden like landmines, for those ambitious enough to unearth them. #HumbertHumbert's first love, #AnnabelLeigh, is named after the "maiden" in the poem #AnnabelLee written by #EdgarAllenPoe when he lived on #KingsbridgeRoad and the #GrandConcourse in the #Bronx. Vlad's connection with the master of #wordplay makes sense, as #Poe married his 13-year-old cousin. Further, upon checking into the first motel, Humbert checks in as Dr. Edgar H. Humbert, a second nod to Poe. Besides #hiddengems the story is filled with #criminallaw issues (Vlad's Pop was after all a lawyer and wrote about criminal law) such as #statutoryrape and #murder. Humbert and #DoloresHaze could only legaly consumate their relationship once he lives in NYC, where Vlad once lived, and receives her letter. At this point she is 17 years old - the age of consent in NYS. Second, there is the scuffle between Humbert and the playwright #ClareQuilty in which Quilty is killed. Due to the underlying personal issues, and the scuffle, a #criminallawyer could argue #selfdefense at trial. However a criminal trial is not in the 🃏's. From jail, Humbert writes that he opposes #capitalpunishment but would sentence himself to 35 years for rape, and dismiss the rest of the charges. Throughout the novel, Humbert presents his case to us, the jury, and only in the end addresses his victim directly. Humbert says he is thinking of prophetic sonnets, and like #Shakespeare in #Sonnet18 unshackles his love, and his loved ones, from the #bondsoftime, Humbert predicted that his story would live forever, and that their love would be immortalized. Humbert is aware that romance, like all 🎁's, should be closely guarded, or you run the risk of losing it.👍 to #PeterMendelsund on the arresting #bookjacket.
