MOST RECENT

One thing that I’ve hated myself as an artist for a long time was my lack of style. This is strange, because it wasn’t always the case. When I look back at my old art, my art remained surprisingly consistent over 5-10 art pieces (as opposed to me changing it up almost every piece). I noticed it was around 2012 when, simultaneously, I both started to actually like my art and yet lose the style I had before. I know my art is better now—it’s more dynamic, my lineart doesn’t take like 8 hours, hair comes easier to me, I don’t do dumb shit like spend 3 hours doing base colours, I draw on a larger scale because I make a lot less mistakes that I have to fudge around with on a low resolution. I can actually COLOUR now, oh my god was that a massive hurdle that took me years to get over. I know it’s better, but yet I look at my old art and think—damn, that shit was more marketable. And it’s true, because I used to do Gaia commissions, and commission work forces an artist to work within a framework. I stopped doing commissions regularly around 2012-2013... Or when I lost my ‘style’, but gained better skills as an artist in general haha. This is not me dissing artists with a consistent style btw—in fact, I’m very admirable of them, because it means they put a lot of back breaking work into developing that shit that most people think comes naturally. Anyways, this is my long winded way of saying I want to look at my old art style and see if I can salvage anything, or build someone on top of it. So I’ll be doing a lot more of these 200X vs 2018 comparisons arts for a bit.

So touching to walk into your dear friends’ house, not having seen them for FIVE YEARS and find the painting you did for them hanging in their living room. 😢 The base of this mixed media piece is a photograph I took in Tangiers, a mess of string on a nail in a Medina passageway. Men and boys were spinning threads to make twine, tying them to nails like this and using the length of the passageway to make their strings long and taut. I was fascinated by this process and by the casual use of public space to create a commercial/creative product. So I took a pic. And then I collaged the heck out of it. 😂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Good morning! Has anyone else experienced the artist dilemma of “which is my paint-water and which is my tea?”. Which is worse, almost taking a sip of paint water or cleaning your brush in your tea?

Starting in September, I’m offering my first online course - 12 Weeks of Conscious Creativity- based on The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. A key component of The Artist’s Way is “morning pages”: three pages of writing at the start of each day. Every day. For 12 weeks. Getting this habit started can be enormously challenging, but once we are consistently writing on a daily basis, this practice can have an amazing effect on our creativity. Writing every day is truly a transformative practice.
🖊
Luckily, you don’t have to develop this discipline alone. Tonight I’ll be going live at 8 pm on both Facebook & Instagram to discuss the benefits of writing every day and how the 12 Weeks of Conscious Creativity course is designed to hold you accountable to this daily practice.
🖊
Tune in tonight at 8 pm & be sure to check out the Contribute Your Verse website for more info on 12 Weeks of Conscious Creativity (link in bio).

My mom said that, when I was little, the paper she gave me to paint on seldom had a house, or a flower or anything recognizable, but rather was covered with different colored splotches. I just loved mixing colors! Tapestry, more than any other weaving I've ever done, nurtures that love in me. #todaysfirstweaving is sampling weft bundles for the sunflower's center.
