#nowplaying🎧 RED OCTOPUS, the 1975 album from Jefferson Starship which features the monster hit, “Miracles” (my personal all-time “guilty pleasure song”) written and sung by vocalist/guitarist/pianist Marty Balin. The rest of the band is as follows: Grace Slick (piano/vocals), Paul Kantner (rhythm guitar/vocals), John Barbata (drums/percussion/vocals), Craig Chaquico (lead guitar/vocals). Papa John Creach (violin/electric violin), Pete Sears (bass/keyboards/vocals), David Freiberg (bass/keyboards/vocals). Slick, Kantner, and Balin were the remaining members from Jefferson Airplane. Englishmen Sears had been a member of Rod Stewart’s backing band (including in the albums GASOLINE ALLEY & EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY). He joined JS in 1974. Freiberg was a stalwart of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene, having been a member of Quicksilver Messenger Service and Jefferson Airplane. He is the one credited with creating the distinctive organ riff on the aforementioned “Miracles”. He left the band in 1984, shortly before they dropped “Jefferson” from their name. Barbata had been a drummer with The Turtles (most notably on “Happy Together”), CSN&Y (as well as on Crosby’s, Stills’s, and Nash’s solo albums). He retired from music after a horrific auto accident in 1978. Creach was a renowned blues musician who, at the time of this album’s release, was 62 (21 years older than Freiberg, the next oldest member of the group). He had performed & recorded with Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, T-Bone Walker, & Nat King Cole prior to being a member of Jefferson Airplane/Starship from 1970 to 78. He died in 1994 from congestive heart failure. Sacramento Native Chaquico (37 years younger than Creach) joined an early incarnation of Jefferson Starship at age 17 and became an official member at 20. He remained a member until the group’s disbandment in 1991. #vinyl #vinyllife #vinylcollection #jeffersonstarship #redoctopus #miracles #martybalin #graceslick #paulkantner #petesears #davidfreiberg #papajohncreach #craigchaquico #johnbarbata
