#craftin #weaving #basket I was very fortunate recently to learn this coil weaving technique from @donnablackall . Donna taught us that the technique was traditionally practiced by Yorta Yorta women and other peoples along the Murray river, but apparently it's now been shared and is popular with indigenous textile artists from all over Australia. The material Donna uses is New Zealand flax. Now that I've had my eyes opened to it I see the stuff everywhere! It's amazing that this useful and strong material is growing in verges and gardens literally everywhere I look. I also learned that Maori weavers traditionally gave their first piece away, which I think is a nice idea. So when this is finished it'll be off to find a home with someone else.
