Another set of RaceTec customs in for the Edelbrock headed 498 BBC. This will bump the compression from the lame 8.8:1 range it had to 10.5:1 and a substantial improvement in power and efficiency.

The downside to having more power is less traction with regular radial tires. While highly entertaining when you can do rolling 30mph burnouts, it can be a real problem. #Mickeythompsontires ET Street Radials have proven to work pretty well, are DOT legal and drive like a regular tire yet provide good grip.

This '69 Buick 430 will have lots of life, after honing with a torque plate (made on our CNC mill) I was able to have nice bores at 4.1950" (+.0075") and will have RaceTec make me a custom piston using a .062/.062/.188 ring pack vs the standard 5/64" ring set.
Many of the engines we do are increasing in value and rarity, so we go to extra efforts to not just do the standard rebuilder "bore it 30 over".

Doing some chamber blending on these BBC 840 heads along with some bowl work. Between the factory cuts and prior valve jobs, the seat to chamber transitions weren't conducive to better airflow.

Another set of RaceTec customs for an Oldsmobile stroker project. These are to replace the flat top pistons that were in a shortblock my customer purchased that he was told would yield 10.5:1. It actually would have been 12.5:1 CR with the OEM iron heads that the customer had done by a different shop.
This is just another example of why it pays to carefully choose who you work with in building your classic musclecar engine. Laying out a complete plan, before spending any money, saves the customer and engine builder time and wasted effort on a combination that yields horrible results.

Here is a good example of why you want to measure bolt stretch/preload. Left photo shows .0035" of bolt stretch at the rated 64lbs of torque with proper lube under bolt head and on threads. To reach the proper stretch of .0046" in right side photo took 80lbs, verified with 2 different torque wrenches.
Improper bolt preload means less clamping force and the higher possibility of rod bolt failure, and that's not a pretty sight.

This is what happens when corners are cut and your average engine rebuilder gives you a smokn' deal on machine work. A good machinist knows the value of the work he is doing for his customers, and charges accordingly. Sadly, this kind of thing is pretty common for me to find, and the customer is the one that unfortunately suffers.

Dyno graph from the 1969 L71 425HP Tripower 427 we built and dyno tested. This is a numbers matching build with just some minor tweaks we did to give it that extra boost. No porting was done to the intake manifold at all, not even a gasket match. In fact, there is a 1/4" lip from manifold floor to port floor of the head. This engine ran extremely well and makes excellent power considering the components used.

All 3 sides cut parallel to crank centerline, 45-90-45 to crank/cam centerline and to the same blueprinted height within .001" using our True Deck fixture. Doing this eliminates the need to mock up crank, rods, and a piston to check each corner of the block.

I call this original "Needs to mop the floor after going to the Chiropractor". Signed copies will be limited to 10pcs... Cleaned, pressure tested, magged, shot peened, and now time for guides and hardened seats before surfacing and a upgraded valve job on these 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke heads.

Decided to double check the thrust face on this BBC, and found it was out .008!! Had to trim the cap at a slight angle to get the thrust square and the .004" bore taper will be corrected on the line hone.

The L71 427 we had on the dyno a few weeks ago sported a fresh set of date coded Holleys. Unfortunately the front carb suffered from fuel leaking between the main body and baseplate, and a quick attempt with a large single cut file wasn't enough to correct surface issues while on the dyno. So in order to fix the issue in the Bridgeport it goes with our ever versatile HF-2400 fixture. After carefully clamping the odd shaped casting, it was precisely indicated in before machining the least amount of material off the metering block and baseplate surfaces. The extra fuel that was leaking out of this area is enough to absolutely ruin part throttle driveability, fuel mileage, and will wash down the ring seal before long too.

I noticed on disassembly that this 496 wasn't stroker clearanced at all...which is unusual with the rods they used. The last time was because it wasn't actually a 4.250" crank. Closer inspection after cleaning reveals 5 rods were just grazing the block. And the owner told me they gave him external dampner and flexplate originally. ..for an internal balance setup!

The obvious and some not so obvious points on this 496 teardown. Typical production engine shop work, the bores are left razor sharp after boring so that they scrape the piston skirts at BDC every revolution and then that trash gets dragged up and down the bores doing even more damage. Pistons and bores are thoroughly trashed. They were also nice enough to install main studs, but didn't bother to line hone the mains because they shined up real nice with Scotchbrite!
So despite a nice shop and nice machines, the point is you still need to have a SKILLED machinist doing the actual work and not just an employee.

Teardown of this 496 BBC to diagnose high oil consumption, lack of power and an overheating issue. Engine has less than 2k miles on it. Knowing the source of the machine work, I'm not suprised by what you see here. Improper honing technique meant this engine wasn't going to stay sealed for very long, and this thing was pumping oil like crazy, despite the fact it has Gapless secondary rings in it. Despite being done on nice new machines, and the use of a torque plate, it still takes a SKILLED machinist to do the work properly. Unfortunately for the inexperienced, shiny surfaces mean it must be good when it's really the subsurface that is important.

Needed some clearance for the Manton pushrods with the Crower shaft rockers, so I used a tapered end mill to gain clearance where I needed it. Many builders just skimp and use a basic 3/8" pushrod to make it easy, but that just leads to other problems, and durability is a top priority for anything I build.

Setting final chamber size and compression ratio on this build, zipping off the first .015" with this rough cut and then the final .005" for a finish cut with the proper Ra for the Fel-Pro MLS gaskets.
