This was my first ever attempt at a two layer corset, pattern from the book “Corsets Historical Patterns and Techniques” by Jill Salen.
Made this corset for myself, along with another for stock and a mock up, by enlarging the book pattern using the grid technique and then grading up the paper pattern to my measurements. All done in the ten week course at Southern Oregon University.
I learned so much about how to clean finish a garment building this, from slip stitching the silk binding along the top and bottom edges, to experimenting with a colored thread on the white coutille inside.

Here’s a throwback to my 1500’s dress I made back in 2016 in my last year of college while I was still in New Zealand. This dress was my first big historical project, let’s not talk historical accuracies looking back on this dress two years on is interesting but also shows how much I’ve learnt! I had big plans for this dress and wanted to make a loose gown to be paired with it but as I was working on this in class I didn’t have a lot of time and it got the better of me. I was finishing hand sewing eyelets only hours before this photo was taken! I’d love to remake a dress from this era for a comparison in the future.
This costume got me a scholarship for excellence in textiles and I topped my textiles class with it so it holds a very special place in my heart!

That time I put the slash and spread method to good use on this beautiful 1930s dress pattern. From start to finished mock-up was a ten hour job. This was the first time I’d ever experimented with slash and spread, so patterning was the longest bit of the process. The last photo is not the finished mock-up, rather the finished collar I had draped on to create a pattern for later. After this was taken I draped a sleeve and handed the project off to the shop manager to use in a video for future students. #independentstudy #bfa #bachelorfinearts #thirties #dress #theatre #theater #costumetechnology #costumedesign #costumeconstruction #costumefabricator #designer #builder #making #makers #makingthings #sou #oca #southernoregonuniversity #oregoncenterforthearts #slashandspread #draper #tailor #firsthand #stitcher

Today’s showcase photos feature:
Lorna Sherry! “During third year I researched the effects the second world war and rationing had on clothing and fabrics in the UK. It was a fascinating topic featuring amazing accounts of what the housewives throughout the country managed to do. I immersed myself into the topic in second semester making a ladies outfit. This contained altering a mens suit into a ladies, a blouse with interchangeable fronts, a coat made out of a candlewick bedspread and finally a hat crocheted out of mailing string with cling film flowers.”

While it's all fun and games getting my fall seeing classes and workshops set up, I need a little me costuming time as well. 😊 Using this Simplicity Victorian inspired pattern to create a coat out of this lovely lightweight burgundy velveteen. Not sure what I'll need to line it with just yet. #sewingproject #victorianinspiration #steampunkfashion #costumemom #costumeconstruction #somethingforme #costumedesign
