Former Rep. #CorrineBrown, D-Fla., was sentenced to five years in federal prison Monday after she was convicted of 18 counts of charges related to #fraud and #corruption.
A judge found Brown guilty of 18 of 22 counts in May for taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from a sham charity, One Door for Education, and using the money for parties, trips, and shopping.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Corrigan also sentenced Ronnie Simmons, Brown’s chief of staff, and Carla Wiley, the charity’s president, to 48 months and 21 months in prison, respectively. “This was a crime born out of entitlement and greed committed to ensure a lifestyle that was beyond their means,” Corrigan said in a statement before announcing the sentences, according to the Florida Times-Union. 👉🏼"Just think of the good that could have been done with that money if it would have been used for its intended purpose.” Brown must report to prison no sooner than Jan. 8.
