Happy Bike To Work (and everywhere else) Day! I forgot how much joy I get from riding everyday. From the first time I rode my tiny pink bike (with a little help from my dad. ok. he was holding it the whole time) down the hill behind our house - to the first feelings of freedom and adventure as I would bike with my best childhood friend, the seemingly endless country miles to the general store to get forbidden candy - to the exhilarating confidence boosting, assertiveness building years spent biking though Boston Traffic (if you think driving in that city is intense, try biking in that traffic then try biking in that traffic as a woman) or the hundreds of treks through the mountains and plains of Colorado. I have always loved it. However, for a few years, and before I stopped riding entirely, that joy was mostly lost as the focus switched to pushing my body to it's limit - breaking personal bests biking up Flagstaff on my lunch break, worrying about proving myself to the mostly (often arrogant, always competitive ) men on road bikes around me, obsessed with extreme calorie burn and a lifelong fear of never being "thin enough." That little girl whose heart soared just looking at the white handlebar tassels on her bike, let alone the feeling of freedom speeding down empty roads alone, was drowned out with voices of "not good enough" and a bike was just another means to become "better." So I can't tell you how happy I have been to fall completely in love with this new bike and at a time in my life where I have let go of a lot of that perfection driven sense of less than. She's fast and fun to ride. She's damn sexy with her matte black frame with hidden Robin's Egg Blue. But mostly she's helping me remember that sense of freedom and joy and to add not only to my own health but the health of the environment. She may not have tassels, but she still makes my heart soar.
