The Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta is the main Catholic place of worship in Conversano, in the metropolitan city of Bari, the cathedral of the diocese of Conversano-Monopoli.
In Romanesque style, the building was started between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, was renovated in 1358-1379 maintaining the original forms and then restored heavily first in the eighteenth century and then in 1911, following a fire.
In June 1997, Pope John Paul II elevated it to the dignity of a minor basilica.
