#CONGOBOOKCLUB LEGA CULTURE: Art. Initiation and Moral Philosophy Among a Central Africa People, Biebuyck, D | $120- $450
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ ABOUT THE LEGA PEOPLE

The Lega people (or Warega) are an ethnic group of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In 1998 their population was about 250,000.

The Lega people traditionally live in small village groups, with no central authority. Within a community, a chief inherits his position on a patrilineal basis, and his close relatives have highest rank. Counterbalancing this hereditary structure, the Bwami society also regulates social and political life. This society has seven levels for men and four for women and is open to all. An initiate advances through the ranks through a complex system of instruction, payment and initiation, achieving increasing status. A member of the highest level is recognized as a Kindi, a social leader with great moral authority.

The #Legapeople are polytheistic. Their gods include Kalaga, the promiser; Kenkunga, the reassembler; Ombe, the hidden; Kaginga, the incarnation of evil. Kaginga assists sorcerers, but Bwami membership can protect an individual against the evil doings of witches.

BOOK | Kinship: A Family's Journey in Africa and America | Philippe E. Wamba, Penguin Group USA, 2000 | ISBN 0452278929

In this deeply felt, bridge-building book, #PhilippeWamba, the son of an African American mother and a #Congolese father, uses his fascinating personal background as a lens through which to view three centuries of shared history between Africans and #AfricanAmericans. It is at once a vividly detailed memoir and a richly researched work of scholarship that deftly weaves accounts of Wamba's multinational childhood in Boston, Massachusetts, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with enlightening analyses of history, music, literature, religion, and politics.

Whether writing about his dissident father's imprisonment by #Zaire's dictator #MobutuSeseSeko or discussing #MartinLutherKing, Jr., and #MichaelJackson, Wamba examines the complexity of relationships within the international black community and tackles misperceptions on both sides of the ocean.

MUANA MBOKA | OWN IT! has signed a "very special debut" by poet @jj_bola entitled 'No Place to Call Home' following a "keenly and closely contested" auction.

#CONGOBOOKCLUB D.R. CONGO: THE DARKNESS OF THE HEART, Loso Kiteti Boya, 2010 (200 pages) | ISBN: 1450082491

SYNOPSIS

This book recounts from the perspective of a #Congolese native the 500-years journey of the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It analyzes dispassionately the facts of the turbulent history of the country and its continuing impact on the life of the modern-day Congolese.

In the book, Loso Kiteti Boya set out to begin the search for the "Congolese" answers to the DR Congo's historical paradox of a very rich country living a very poor life in a neighborhood in which it is the biggest and yet the weakest country. He travels back five hundred years to rediscover the ancient #kingdomofKongo and look closely at its people, institutions, value and belief systems, customs and practices and try to establish the linkages between the present cultural values, belief system, and practices of the modern-day Congolese with those of their past. Through the revisiting of the past, he tries to identify the ways and means of a more effective strategy for social, political, and economic renaissance in the DR Congo. Although a diary, the book is not a chronological presentation of the Congo's history.

The book follows the less publicized but crucial journeys of the numerous Congolese #slaves to the Americas, documenting their early settlements in the United States, the Caribbean Islands, and Brazil and reconnecting their present-day descendants in the Americas to their Congolese roots and ancestry. | FOLLOW our book club: @congobookclub

'Before the Birth of the Moon' by Valentin Y Mudimbe
Set in the 1960s, shortly after Congo's independence from Belgium, Mudimbe's story reflects the political uncertainty and instability of the period. It's told through the complex relationship between a government minister (known only as The Minister) and a prostitute (named Ya), who meet in the steamy world of Kinshasa's bars and nightclubs.

Their personal stories are inextricably linked to the turmoil within the country as it struggles for nationhood. Each has committed a grievous act of betrayal against the other, which costs them dear. Loyalty, deceit and greed lie at the heart of the tale.

The Minister is attracted by the wealth and power of office, and appears to have little concern for his country or its people. Ya left her village to avoid an arranged marriage, and has her heart set on enjoying life in the big city. She wants nothing to do with the anti-government rebellion of her tribe, which is led by her father, a village chief.

But neither can escape the tumultuous events taking place in the country.

Mudimbe, a respected philosopher and writer on Africa, was born in what was then the Belgian Congo. He teaches literature at Duke University in the US.

It was the Irish Defence Forces’ first experience of active service since 1923. Irish diplomat Conor Cruise O’Brien headed the #UN mission in Katanga. Former chief of staff of the defence forces, Lt-Gen. Seán MacEoin, was in overall command of UN troops in Congo. Irish units suffered casualties and men taken prisoner as the fighting in #Katanga continued. The crisis now facing Taoiseach Seán Lemass became the most delicate and dangerous chapter in Ireland’s foreign relations since 1945.
Based on a first-hand account of the fighting by an Irish cavalry officer, previously unseen UN archives and the papers of UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold, this book covers eighteen critical months from July 1960 to December 1961, which almost tore the UN apart and which brought the realities of UN membership to #Ireland. BOOK: Tropical Cowboys
Westerns, Violence, and Masculinity in Kinshasa, Ch. Didier Gondola

During the 1950s and 60s in the Congo city of #Kinshasa, there emerged young urban male gangs known as “Bills” or "Yankees." Modeling themselves on the images of the iconic American #cowboy from Hollywood film, the “Bills” sought to negotiate lives lived under oppressive economic, social, and political conditions.
They developed their own style, subculture, and slang and as Ch. Didier Gondola shows, engaged in a quest for #manhood through #bodybuilding, marijuana, violent sexual behavior, and other transgressive acts. #Gondola argues that this street culture became a backdrop for #Congo-#Zaire’s emergence as an independent nation and continues to exert powerful influence on the country’s #urban youth #culture today.

Congolese author has wielded both gun and pen in his eventful life. In his latest novel he draws the DRC's excesses into a heady concoction of humour and horror.

The forest is at the heart of In Koli Jean Bofane's novel Congo Inc., subtitled Le Testament de Bismarck (Bismarck's will). Not just any forest though, but the forest that men shamelessly violate to extract the riches clasped between its centuries-old roots.

it explains why I have a completely different view on all the history between blacks and whites

But the pygmy Isookanga – "a globalist who aspires to become a globaliser" – doesn't care. He hates hunting monkeys or gathering plants from the forest floor for his old uncle Lomama.

LITERATURE | Tram 83 | Author: Fiston Mwanza Mujila | Buy on Amazon: amzn.to/1POIgz2 ○●○● The main storyline follows two friends who reunite in a bustling and unnamed African city. One of them is a writer who has just come back home from Europe and is working on a play he wants to get published. The other is a hustler who enjoys the dangerous nightlife, the company of very young women, and devising new ways to get rich. Their lives collide with those of prostitutes, racketeers, politicians, intellectuals, tourists, and even a publisher as they all meet in the Tram 83, the only nightclub in the war-torn, poverty-stricken town.

Tram 83 plunges the reader into the modern African gold rush as cynical as it is comic and colorfully exotic, using jazz rhythms to weave a tale of human relationships in a world that has become a global village.
