Today I got a message from someone asking how I 'can eat sweets and stay thin.' [I had insta-storied my visit to my favourite sweet shop on route to my lecture lol 🌝]⠀

It’s a valid question, and because of the labelling of food we see everyday; it’s a common association we make. So aside from the little bit inside me that felt weird being called 'thin' lol (It reminds me of the size 0 'thinspo' trend I grew up with but I know she meant well 💕), I explained;⠀

1. No single-food will cause fatloss, no single-food is fattening. Eating more energy (calories) than you’re using over a period of time will cause weight-gain. Eating less energy (calories) than you’re expending over a period of time will cause weight-loss 💪⠀

2. But arguably more importantly, looking ‘thin’ (or larger) isn’t an accurate indication of good health. If all I ate was 1,000 calories of white chocolate every day, I would be eating less energy than I am expending but I would be in dreadful health lol⠀

A context is key (I know I keep saying this, I hate it too but it's true 🙌). White chocolate isn’t nutritious, or a staple in my day-to-day diet however I will enjoy a few squares every so often in moderation. Cus i like it 💅 Eating a balance of adequate macro/micro-nutrients AND food that comes in a stripy pink paper bag is my kinda balance.⠀

Dining out requires the same caloric awareness as every day food choices as the slightest variations can change the entire energy intake of a meal. Sometimes you might be on the go, unprepared or just socialising - be conscious of your choices in these scenarios too.
Some people select the food they eat based on a perception of healthy or unhealthy with little regard for caloric value. Eating well for overall health and fat loss is a two part system in that quality and quantity go hand in hand, the art of weight loss will always boil down to calories in vs calories out. If you want to lose weight you need to calorically be consuming less energy than expenditure. While some foods are indeed more nutrient dense 🍌🍏🥕🥑 than others 🍫🍦🍬🍩 in that they contain more micronutrients than an alternative of a similar caloric density THEY ALL HAVE CALORIES. If you're trying to lose weight it's necessary to be conscious of caloric intake given it is possible to over eat chicken and broccoli just as it is possible to over eat on pork ribs and chips. Be conscious and aware of the caloric and macronutrient value of food and when eating particular foods be aware of what you've had and what you're going to have for the rest of the day. There will always be lower calorie alternatives. Take the above example for instance, both look the same on the surface with a few flavour variations made according to preference; yet these variations have changed the caloric density significantly between each meal.
