Columbia cabernet sauvignon, 2015

A nice close-to-home cab sauv with juicy acidity bringing out fruity flavours. Not quite as complex as desired, but tasty and easy drinking. 7.5/10

Land Matching Program fosters agricultural production⠀
New and young farmers in the Columbia Basin are receiving support and services from a dedicated land matcher, as part of the new B.C. Land Matching Program.⠀

This program connects farmers looking for land with landowners wanting to lease their land for farming.⠀

“This program will help young people enter into the agricultural industry, which might otherwise be a challenge because of the rising cost of land in some regions of B.C.,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “We’re helping British Columbians new to farming get access to land, and in turn, boosting the province’s food security and increasing prosperity. Let’s get farmers onto the land, and let’s get farming!”⠀

Land matchers offer support and service ranging from hosting land-linking events to developing relationships with landowners, land seekers and community leaders, to facilitating negotiations and terms of leasing arrangements, with the support of a lawyer, between landowners and land leasers.⠀

“We are really excited to see the growing interest in programs that offer hands-on support for land access in B.C.” said Sara Dent, Young Agrarians BC’s program director. “New and young farmers need good, long-term land opportunities. Please reach out to us if you have farmland for lease.”⠀

The price of land in some parts of the province is making farming unattainable for many families, especially where some of the highest-quality agricultural soil is found. Many established farmers aging out of the industry are trying to develop succession plans to ensure their land is kept in production. As well, farmland owners who are not farming are often motivated to support local food systems and provide an opportunity to a young farmer-entrepreneur by leasing their land.⠀

Seventh Salmon Festival flowed deep⠀
By Anne Jardine⠀

On certain rare occasions, the spirit moves. The movement, the moment is beyond explaining, but it is deeply felt.⠀

The Secwepemc/Ktunaxa Salmon Festival’s opening ceremony was such a moment.⠀

On September 8, at Invermere’s James Chabot Beach, the ceremonial canoes landed to open up the festival. The organizers hoped for this ceremony to be a special welcome for the hundreds of participants, for the invited dignitaries representing federal, provincial, and municipal governments, Parks Canada, BC Hydro, and for the long lost salmon to whose spirit they called.⠀

The Salmon Festival has been celebrated every September for the past seven years. It has been a popular, colourful cultural event hosted by the Invermere area First Nations, Ktunaxa and Shuswap Band.⠀

This year was different. According to the festival’s coordinator Diana Cote, “We are launching a three nations initiative to bring back the salmon to this great river system. At the Friday night meeting before the festival opened, we had all the government, industry, and First Nation leadership and elders at the table. It was powerful. We were able to express what the loss of the salmon has meant. Out of this expression, I think a profound understanding was reached, and from that, for the first time, we see a real commitment to bring them back.”⠀

Salmon have not been up this river since 1938, after the building of Grand Coulee Dam. The loss has had drastic implications for all the cultures that once based their primary food system on the salmon. The disappearance of a prime food source was a devastating impact.⠀

“Not only has it weakened us culturally and economically,” said Cote, “it has changed us right down to the DNA. There has been ‘something missing.’ For three or four generations, we have been starving for the prime food that was once so much a part of our life. This loss is something that has not really been spoken about. I think understanding that truth was what helped all the leaders come to this new level of commitment to restore the salmon.”⠀

Out in Seattle for a work trip. I always try to eat and drink local stuff when I’m traveling. Tried these two Washington wines at dinner the other night. The @delillecellars Charleur Blanc was an awesome find. This is a Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon blend with rich and fruity flavors balanced with bright acidity. I am not very familiar with Washington wines and this bottle really opened up my perception about Washington whites. Truly impressed! As great as this wine was the true highlight of the night for me were the awesome variety of west coast oysters. You guys are so spoiled out here with such awesome and fresh varieties! #wine #whitewine #delillecellars #savignonblanc #semillon #columbiavalley #localfood #newperspective #oysters #westcoastoysters

Our Chenin Blanc grapes come from the Columbia Valley. We produce only a small number of cases of this delicious white wine, because grape sourcing is limited... but this wine is simply too good not to make. Have you tried it?
