Printing some portraits to take back with me to Ladakh in case I meet some of the folk from last time I was there. I avoid promising prints if I am not sure I can deliver but do bring some when I can. Here are three that I like. 2/3

It takes a team: it can be a stressful time around a Geiko making erikae, or transition from Maiko. Not least because of the realization that expectations will be further raised for performance all of her arts. As always, it takes a village to raise a Geiko and, as well as incredible work by Tomitsuyu herself, combined with her own high standards, there is crucial input from many in her okiya and her kagai. There are also all the specialist crafts like, wig makers, who individually make her wig and teach her to fit it expertly. The geiko who opens the noren to greet the world has behind her a dedicated team and years of disciplined work. 2/3

Nomads of the High Pastures, Ladakh. (1/3 in a series) reposting as I start to prepare for my next visit to Ladakh this August.

This senior man, a leader in his community, welcomed us into his tent of yak wool and offered tea, despite being in the process of packing up to move his herd and belongings to a new location. A warm and impressive person it was a delight to meet him and his community and I hope I can meet him this next visit.

Despite his mother's best efforts this child looked stoically into the middle distance as he stood on the back of the family truck in the cold of the early evening. I imagine he was in the truck both for fun and to keep him out of the way while mum and dad dismantled their tent.

This woman reveals her deep distress at her son's stolen education. She recounts the story of saving to send her son for an education in the capital, under the care of a man who promised to look after him, only to discover, after some time, that her child was being put out to work instead of educated. I have found that parents of very little means around the world, often commit a huge part of scant resources to their children's education. While many, many children are able to gain from their parents' efforts, the parents own lack of formal education can sometimes leave them and their children vulnerable.

I first met Tomitsuyu back in January 2013
In a few days she will make her transition to geiko after more than five years of determined study and so much hard work. She is looking forward to becoming more skilled in the traditional singing style. She has been performing a special dance that requires her to show the pain of a lost love and let the emotions inform the dances movements rather than the reverse.

I have always been interested in the special quality of ‘presence’ in my work, as well as in exploring deep cultural traditions. The development of deep artistry is ongoing and Tomitsuyu is conscious that standards and expectations only increase with the coming transition. Series 2/3

My first meeting five years ago began a process that included my book ‘Geiko & Maiko of Kyoto’ as well as assorted other projects. The link for the book is on my profile.

Three from Varanasi: I guess the winding narrow lanes add to the sense that something special is around the next corner. And it is. Even if it is an everyday task of cleaning ones front step. I will return with my friend @the.manjit in August which is really great. Meanwhile I am off to Kyoto tomorrow. 1/3

Kolkata wholesale market: a few more images from a past long post to my (infrequent) blog. The wholesale vegetable markets of Kolkata have an epic quality. A jostling cast of thousands in an cinematic crowd scene: buyers, sellers, busy, resting, chatting and arguing. The link is currently on my Instagram profile too. 2/3
