Today is World Rhino Day! For those of us out there who are involved in rhinoceros conservation, this is a day to celebrate these super cool critters. Today is also a time to reflect on why it's so necessary we do what we do. The threat to rhinos has never been more serious… there are fewer than 30,000 rhinos left in the world, across 5 distinct species. There are 58 Javan rhinos left in the world… I guarantee you know more people than there are Javan rhinos left in the world, or even Sumatran rhinos (100). The biggest threats to rhinos are poaching for their horns - used in bogus Chinese medicine, and habitat loss - due to slash and burn palm oil production in Asia.
I painted this last year for the @hornsandheroes art show. The profits it brought at auction went to benefit @rhinosirf… if you want to make sure there are still rhinos around for your kids and grandkids to see, please donate to the International Rhino Foundation and ALWAYS be aware of where the ingredients in your snack food and household chemicals come from.
