In the garden of orange things, for the Color Anthropology show at @lightgreyartlab. So many good images/ colours to see, plus you can purchase prints from them! & some orange trivia: the colour is named after the ripe fruit, likely first cultivated in Asia. From there, oranges migrated west to India, East Africa, and then the Mediterranean. By the time they arrived in northern Europe during the renaissance (where the affluent kept orange trees in glass orangeries) many orange things had already been designated red: red hair, red-breasted robins, the red planet. (Orange: from the Old French, pomme d'orenge; Arabic, nāranj; Persian, nārang) #coloranthropology #lgal

Sunday reading. I've had this book since high school when I remember @nancy_crawford_artist telling our class about it and mummy brown! Thought I'd pull it off the shelf for a bit of research for #ColorAnthropology at @lightgreyartlab 🎨

Next up, inking. This is a piece for the Colour Anthropology show at Light Grey Art Lab opening next Friday - I've chosen the colour aureolin/cobalt yellow, a very bright, strong shade of yellow, and am linking it to recent events in the region. Malaysians and Hong Kong folk will know what this is about. #wip #ink #illustration #malaysianartists #malaysianillustration #instaart #lightgreyartlab #lgal #coloranthropology #bungabantahan #protestflowers #flower #chrysanthemum

"Nara Black" by @yoshiyoshitani
Color: Nara Black / #003738
.
"Japanese Irezumi tattoos, tattoos that cover much of the body and use often Japanese mythology and symbolism as inspiration, became popular in the Edo Period. They used Nara Black, an ink that is famous for becoming a distinct blue-green when inserted into the skin.
.
These tattoos became unpopular with their eventual association with the Japanese mob, the Yakuza. And finding a tattoo artist, especially one studied in Irezumi tattoos, became very difficult. To this day, many bathhouses refuse service to those with tattoos.
.
Still, though tattoos and Irezumi tattoos with their Nara Black ink are becoming increasingly popular in Japan."

"Calling From The Other World" by @chenchen_42
Color: Slate Blue / #6A5ACD
.
"I’ve always considered purple as a fantastic color - it's not too warm and not too cold. It is the color at the end of the rainbow and it is the color of dreams. A dream in which a girl goes into an unknown universe with firm determination."

"The Goldenrod Woman" by @munadraws
Color: Dark Goldenrod 3 / #CD950C
.
"The color goldenrod is a representation of the color of some of the deeper gold colored goldenrod flowers. In my culture this golden color is very popular, from jewelry to the designs of our clothes, it's a color I want to explore artistically."

"King Midas & the Golden Curse" by @will_t_kelly
Color: Gold / #FFD700
.
"The Myth of King Midas tells of a King who desired gold above all else. When he was granted his wish that everything that he touched might turn to gold, he was overjoyed. But soon he discovered that his new-found power had a dark side: Those that he loved (including his pet cat!) were not immune to the touch of his greed. The moral: When your wishes and desires get in the way of the ones you love, then those desires must be set aside so that love might prevail."

"The Garden of Orange Delights" by @wentingthings
Color: Orange / #FF7538
.
"Have you ever wondered why some orange things – orange hair, orange-breasted English robins, the orange planet Mars – are instead called red? The color orange has had an interesting path into the English language, and many things that are orange predate the word itself. Orange the color is named after the ripe fruit of the same name, from the Old French pomme d' orange; its first recorded use as a color in the English language is in 1512 – the High Renaissance. (To trace the word further back: orange comes from the Arabic word, nāranj, which itself is from the Persian, nārang). Believed to be native to Asia, cultivation of the orange fruit spread first to India, and then to the eastern Mediterranean from eastern Africa. When oranges arrived in the more northerly climates of Europe, affluent households preserved the trees in dedicated glass orangeries, as seen here in this garden of orange things."

"Haint Blue" by Caroline Dougherty
Color: Haint Blue / #BBE3E6
.
"Haint blue is a facet of old, Southern culture steeped in superstition and hand-me-down culture; the blue is associated with ghosts and is popularly painted on porch ceilings to help protect a house and its inhabitants from the otherworldly."

"Verdigris" by @perstephane
Color: Verdigris / #43B3AE
.
"This image is inspired by the myths of Persephone and Inanna and similar stories that feature a return from the Underworld. Verdigris has a history of being created by burying metal in different ways and was a fickle pigment to use because of the metamorphosis of its original color over time."

"Oaxacan Purple" by @marisamidori
Color: Oaxacan Purple / #990066
.
"This piece is inspired by the dying technique of the Mixtec people of Mexico. Extracting dye from the sea snails clinging to the craggy rocks along the Oaxacan coast is a tradition that spans generations and the purple weavings made from the fibers dyed using the snails' milk are iconic to their culture. Unlike other mollusk dye techniques, the snails are not killed in the process. The milk is rubbed onto the raw fibers and starts out white, darkening to yellow then green and finally purple as it is left out in the sun to cure."

"Bone Black" by @sea.yum
Color: Bone Black / #00000C
.
"Bone black is a pigment made from burning animal bones - commonly known as 'ivory black' in modern pigments - but since ivory has been banned in trade we have been driven to use bones from other sources..."

"Poppy" by @rileyframbes
Color: Poppy / #E42F0C
.
"The poppy flower and its bright red color has been a symbol of both death and sleep since the ancient Greeks. Its color recalls the color of blood while the plant itself can be used as a powerful sedative to numb pain. Contrasting life and death but maintaining a feeling of deep melancholy this piece pushes the emotions this color has come to represent for thousands of years."

"Ultra" by @raxenne
Color: Ultramarine Blue / #3F00FF
.
"Ultramarine is a deep blue color and a pigment which was originally made by grinding lapis lazuli into a powder. The name comes from the Latin ultramarinus, literally 'beyond the sea', because the pigment was imported into Europe from mines in Afghanistan by Italian traders during the 14th and 15th centuries.
.
Ultramarine was the finest and most expensive blue used by Renaissance painters. It was often used for the robes of the Virgin Mary, and symbolized holiness and humility. It remained an extremely expensive pigment until a synthetic ultramarine was invented in 1826."

"In Pink Mood" by @phoenix7472
Color: Deep Pink Light / #FF5CCD
.
"Universally, pink represents feminine and romantic. Deep bright pinks, such as hot pink and Fuchsia are youthful and fun while lighter pinks are associated with romance and sexual connotations. In color psychology, pink is a sign of hope. It is a positive color inspiring warm and comforting feelings.
.
Studies have confirmed that pink has the ability to calm and reassure the feelings of anger, aggression, and neglect. Exposure to large amounts of pink can have a calming effect on the nerves and create physical weakness in people.
.
The illustration depicts what I feel about Pink."

"Perkin's Mauve" by @zobobafoozie
Color: Mauve / #E0B0FF
.
"Mauve (named after the French flower mallow) is a very rare color found in nature, but was accidentally created as the first synthetic dye known as Mauvine by a young scientist by the name of William Henry Perkins. Originally aiming to create quinine (a drug to help treat malaria), the discovery of Mauvine resulted in Perkins opening up his own dyeworks focusing on synthetic dyes and revolutionized not only how fabrics were created for clothing and fashion, but also the study of industrial chemistry. The Perkin Medal is the highest honor in this field in America and was created to celebrate the discovery of this synthetic dye in 1906."

"Lavender" by @peroroh
Color: Lavender / #B57EDC
.
"The color lavender, used traditionally by women who want a more mature color of femininity than pink, symbolizes elegance and romance, being paired with the flower of the same name. Lavender comes from the color purple, which represents the crown chakra, the spiritual energy associated with higher purpose and spiritual connectivity. The term lavender can refer to a wide range of pale, light, medium, and grey-purple colors, but 'true' lavender matches the color of the actual flower."
