Sir Joshua Reynolds's portrait of 'Colonel Tarleton' hanging in the Barry Rooms. Reynolds was the leading English portraitist of the 18th century. He was a key figure in the intellectual life of London, and a friend of Dr Johnson. When the Royal Academy was founded in 1768, Reynolds was elected its first President.

The sitter, Colonel Banastre Tarleton (1754 - 1833) distinguished himself in the American War of Independence, and returned to England as a lieutenant-colonel about the beginning of 1782. This work was painted during that year.

This is a study I've made today at the National Gallery in London. I had a great time, visitors were nice to me, but right now my left hand hurts so bad because I was standing in front of the painting and I have to hold my sketchbook for like an hour.

Happy birthday to Sir Joshua Reynolds, one of the leading English portraitists of the 18th century, born #onthisday in 1723.

Reynolds was born at Plympton in Devon, the son of a headmaster and fellow of Balliol College, Oxford. He was apprenticed in 1740 to the fashionable London portraitist Thomas Hudson, who also trained Wright of Derby. He spent 1749–52 abroad, mainly in Italy, and set up practice in London shortly after his return. He was a key figure in the intellectual life of London, and a friend of Dr Johnson. When the Royal Academy was founded in 1768, Reynolds was elected its first President.
This portrait by Reynolds is of Colonel Banastre Tarleton, who distinguished himself in the American War of Independence, and returned to England as a lieutenant-colonel about the beginning of 1782, when this work was painted.
