Join us Thursday as Sheriff Mike Boudreaux swears in eight new Deputies during the graduation ceremony for the Tulare-Kings Counties Basic Peace Officer Academy, including his second Pathways Scholarship recipient, Hector Negrete.
Who: Sheriff Mike Boudreaux
What: Tulare-Kings Counties Basic Peace Officer Academy graduation
When: 6 p.m., Thursday, July 20
Where: Visalia Nazarene Church, 3333 W. Caldwell Ave., Visalia
Sheriff Boudreaux started the Pathways Scholarship program three years ago as a way to encourage his Explorers to go to college and become Deputies. The goal is to put local youth back in their hometown communities as Sheriff’s Deputies after graduation from college and training in the police academy with funding through the Sence Foundation.
“I’m very proud of the program,” Sheriff Boudreaux said. “It creates stake holders in the community and in the department.” Negrete follows Dep. Jasmine Orozco who graduated from the academy in January and recently completed her field training on patrol at the Orosi Substation.
Negrete was sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff Trainee in January and began his studies at the Tulare-Kings Counties Basic Peace Officer Academy in February. Negrete, along with seven other Deputy Sheriff Trainees, will get sworn in by Sheriff Boudreaux Thursday during the graduation ceremony.

Negrete became acquainted with the Sheriff’s Office when he was a boy in the Sheriff’s PAL Program. From there, he followed in the footsteps of his older sister to become an Explorer. He achieved the rank of Captain.
He was born in Delano and raised in Earlimart. Negrete graduated from Delano High School in 2014.

He is the first person in his family to get a college degree. In January, he earned an associate’s degree in Business Administration from San Joaquin Valley College. He said that he decided to go to college because Sheriff Boudreaux motivated him to apply for the scholarship.
“I wanted to become a deputy,” he said. “I would’ve done almost anything to get hired." #tularecountysheriff #tularecounty #tcso #explorers #collegeofthesequoias

Me and my boy putting in #QUALITY work to reach our dreams! Here we are checking out the video of him running through a simple change of direction drill. I love using technology to help improve my athletes performance. It gives him the chance to see what I see and re-evaluate what he needs to improve upon. Our big hairy audacious dreams scare the living hell out of us! But that's not stopping us. @jwc_jr let's keep grinding my dude! #CFASpeed" - Coach @tristanstidham36 💥

When I started Summer school, I didn't think I could afford it. I was completely stressed out!!! Having only been in California 11 months, I couldn't receive the BOG waiver, and due to not being able to get my transcripts, I wasn't able to get financial aid. Being on a fixed income, I had no clue how I was going to come up with $1,200 and QUICK! I couldn't do a GoFundMe, it takes 2 weeks to process the money.
Then miracles started happening!
I got a BOG Waiver ($644 was paid towards my tuition)! All I needed to do now was buy my textbooks! My math teacher said we didn't need our textbooks, we just had to sign up for MyMathLab, $103 vs. $168 for the text book! Which came with a 2 week trial! I was so thankful! When I got into my ASL class she said we only needed this ONE book!!! Omg!!! 1 book?? And it's only $11?!?!? I did it!!! I've successfully paid for 2 of my textbooks!!!! I'm still short 3 texts books, but 2 I'm borrowing from the library daily, because it's an online class & the other one is $119 (I'm sure I can afford it some how ☺️☺️☺️) I'm still stressed out about college, I've taken on a 15 unit course load for an 8 week time period, and I need all A's to get my scholarship.. But at least I know, at the end of the summer I'll be able to say I DID IT!!! No matter how many times I've cried myself to sleep, the panic attacks I've had on test days! The overwhelming feeling from taking a math class while having dyscalculia, learning a new language, having to write a college research paper on technology, and taking intro to business! I'm doing it! I'm not giving up! #sayiwont #andiwill #stayhumble #staystong #college #educated #educatedwoman #cos #collegeofthesequoias #deaflikeme #asl #textbooksareexpensive
