While we may not stop teens from humiliating their passed out buddies, 🍺🍻they need to at least do it after they have made sure their friend is safe by turning them on their side, keeping their mouth and nose clear from obstruction and checking on them regularly. **** I personally knew someone be who died from asphyxiation because he passed out in a position that blocked his airway (his nose and mouth were covered up and he couldn't breathe). Another student died after choking on his own vomit 🤮 while “sleeping it off” and a recent news article explained how 8 friends didn’t notice their passed out friend had died until the next day... even though he was lying in the lawn for hours during the party... they just thought he was “sleeping it off.” ***** When we are sober, we wake up if we vomit or can't breathe in our sleep... so we don’t die. But significant alcohol consumption turns off those parts of the brain that would otherwise protect us in our sleep.
Turning a passed out person on their side keeps them from choking on their own vomit and is just one life hack all students should know that can save a life. **** See link in bio for a free checklist on some basic skills and lessons all teens must master before they leave for college.
