"Everyone was just doing their job. It was the prisoners job to escape and the officers job to stop them. It was history's biggest game of cat and mouse." -Colditz guide Steffi Schubert.
After a storm passed over tonight, Colditz Castle and its youth hostel looked lovely in the dark. But it wasn't always twinkling lights and warm good nights.
As many of you will know, Colditz had a colourful history of daring escapes by prisoners of war made famous by tv and film. You can hear about them all and see the locations of the escapes on a two hour tour of the castle which includes a replica of the glider the Brits made out of stolen materials, sheets and glue made from porridge!
It's great for kids - there's even the chance to escape out of the ventilation shaft of a potato store. Any takers? Thought not.
Do you remember the TV series and film? We watched it in our youth hostel room tonight after our visit to the museum. Curiously most Germans have never heard of Colditz Castle. it is only famous in English speaking countries.
