Happy Birthday @jimdinestudio (born 1935)! A precedent for Performance Art, Dine staged Happenings with @coldenburg29, #AllanKaprow, @johncagetrust and #RobertWhitman around New York, inspiring movements like Fluxus and Neo-Dada. Autobiographical elements, such as the robe in this print, play an important role in his works. The “Bathrobe” series is inspired by an advertisement he saw in 1963. As the artist shares, "I was looking for a way to do self-portraits without painting my face. I saw this bathrobe in an ad. It had no one in it—but it looked like my shape, so it became a sort of metaphor for me." Such personal items feature prominently in his works as subjects and/or elements of his assemblage.

Happy #PrideMonth #🌈! @david_hockney, on right in this photograph by #DuaneMichals, is openly gay and has always been an advocate for gay rights. He depicted homosexual love before it was decriminalized in the UK. After his move to California in 1963, Hockney began to paint scenes of uninhibited life of athletic young men against luscious backdrop of sunny suburban Southern California.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is not over yet! In The Seniors Project (28), 1999, Korean-born, New York-based artist @nikkislee uses photography to document her camouflaged absorption into social groups. Assuming the role of a senior citizen awaiting a city bus, she poses among a group of people whose presence either aids her disguise or contributes to its unraveling. Can you spot the artist in the photo? (On view now in City of Ambition, through September 16!)

Artist #SamVanAken was on campus recently to create an iteration of his Tree of 40 Fruit project. In this project, Van Aken grafts twigs of local species of stone fruits onto a host tree to create a multitude of blossoms in spring and fruits in summer. His practice preserves heirloom species that are not easily or commercially accessible. Come back to see his project in bloom!

Remembering Robert Indiana (1928–2018), who passed this past weekend. Known as the “American painter of signs,” Indiana had an essential role in assemblage art and Pop art in his prolific career. His works are widely recognized and have been turned into sculptures, stamps, and more. Pictured here is Robert Indiana, along with artist Louise Nevelson, at the Colby Museum in 1973 and a shot of his exhibition in the museum lobby last summer!
