We tracked this large Coconut Crab 🥥 🦀 (Birgus latro) after searching South Beach at night. They are the largest land living arthropod in the world- weighing up to 4 kg and measuring up to 1 meter across. Adults feed primarily on fruits, nuts, seeds and the pith of fallen trees. Considered a delicacy by many island nations, coconut crab populations have declined or become locally extinct due to human predation. All species (including 🥥🦀) are protected inside the Misool Marine Reserve 🙌🏼
Thanks for the great pic 📷 @colkylie .
