The first thing to go into the lounge was this wonderful piece of coal mining history. There's a lot to be learned, no matter which side of the debate you sit. #coalmininghistory #history #coal #steam #whim #staffs #localhistory #coalmininers #coalmining #mining

Happy birthday to my Grandad Horace Kitchener Wise, who would have been 103 today. I never knew him, as he died when my Mum was 10. He is the little baby in the centre of this picture. My Great Grandmother Annie raised him, and I think 7 other children, in a two up two down cottage in Tredegar, South Wales. My Gt Grandfather was a stonemason in the mines and all the boys in the family were coal miners. From what I know of Annie, she was kind and generous of spirit. She must have been an incredibly strong woman. #familytree #familyhistory #southwales #Tredegar #coalminers #coalmininghistory

This image shows a winter snow covering the ground and the coal company’s mule barn. In the background you can see a few of the miners homes along Coops Creek and Mountain View Road, where the Coke Ovens Park exists today. The original photographer took this photo facing south, from where the replica mine entrance is today.
With the help of donations and volunteers, we constructed a large pavilion for parties, weddings and reunions on top of the exact location of the old mule barn. Contact us to book your event there during the spring, summer and early fall months. #cokeovens #cokeovenspark #dunlap #dunlaptn #tn #parkandmuseum #coalmines #coalmining #coalmininghistory #history #tnhistory #tennessee #tennesseeparks #visittennessee #visittn #mulebarn #pavilion #eventvenues #antiquephoto #1900s

A portion of the Trail of Tears is marked with signs inside the Coke Ovens Park boundaries. The signs denote the old Hill Road used in 1838 by Richard Taylor and a group of approximately 1,000 Cherokee Native Americans. The group camped here and traveled across the Cumberland Plateau on their painful journey to Oklahoma. This trail is on the National Register of Historic Places. #cokeovens #cokeovenspark #dunlap #dunlaptn #tn #parkandmuseum #coalmines #coalmining #coalmininghistory #history #tnhistory #tennessee #tennesseeparks #visittennessee #visittn #trailoftears #cherokeehistory #nativeamericanhistory #historicpreservation

Incline and tipple at Little Brush Creek and #7 coal mine. Tennessee’s highway 111 exists just above this area today.
Totally built by hand and a rope hoist pulley system. A true marvel of engineering without the use of machinery.

A selection of 'pit checks' or 'pit tokens' the first three post 1947 and from rossington coal pit (hence the n.c.b which is national coal board) and markham coal pit (b.c which is British coal) and the t.a c one is an earlier one but I'm not sure which pit it is from, The use of Pit Checks is believed to have commenced in Britain c.1860/70 and continued into the 1980/90s when they were eventually replaced by the introduction of electronic swipe cards
Most of the early checking systems employed only one token (usually of brass) per collier. This token was often referred to as a lamp check/token and was often taken home with each collier at the end of each working day. Such lamp tokens were handed in to the lamp room attendant at the start of each shift in exchange for a safety lamp bearing the same identification number as that on the collier's personal check. At the end of his shift the collier would retrieve his check from a tally board in the lamp room or alternatively directly from the lamp room attendant in exchange for the safe return of his lamp, They basically informed colliery management of who was in work but became vital when rescue services needed to know how many men were actually underground during an incident such as a fire or explosion. Colliery check systems apparently became common during the late nineteenth century and became mandatory in 1913 after an amendment to the 1911 Coal Mines Act.#historyofcoalmining #coalmininghistory #pitcheck #pittoken #coalmine #minerstoken #minerscheck #nationalcoalboard #collieryhistory #collierytoken #collierycheck #rossingtonpit #rossingtoncolliery #rossingtoncoalpit #markhampit #markhamcolliery #markhamcoalpit #mininghistory #historyofmining #lampchecks #lamptokens #cabinetofcuriosities #odditiesandcuriosities #odditiesappreciation #coalminehistory #historyofcoal

The sinkhole produced when we drilled into this hidden vertical mine shaft, 30' across & >9' deep; Things that rose to the surface before it froze over: a 14x14" timber 8' long, several bottles w/corks intact, and one very old lightbulb #coalmininghistory #michigan

Canary in the Coal Mine. #20/31. The use of canaries in mines dates back to 1911. They were crucial in detecting deadly carbon monoxide and other toxic gases for the miners. As long as the bird was making noise, the men knew the air was safe. The birds were used until 1986. For more info and pics, go to historybones.com/canaryinthecoalmine or just hit link in bio. This is a “Snore”! Actually it’s a colliery Wind-bore. It was sited at the bottom of a mine shaft connected to the end of the suction pipe from the pump and stopped debris getting in to the pump. Colliers called it The Snore after the snoring sound it made as it sucked in water and air. #elsecarheritagecentre #collieries #snore #barnsleyisbrill #castiron #mineworkings #perforatedmetal #coalmines #coalmininglife #historyofmining #pumpingengines #elsecar #ironpipes #castiron #scenesofyorkshire #southyorkshire #coalmininghistory #coalmining #whatonearthisthatthing #whatonearthisthat #unusualthings
