This is #slowfashion. My Lola (grandmother) made this for my mom when she came to the US back in 1987. They did not have a lot of money back then but my grandmother was creative, skilled and entrepreneurial. She wanted to make sure my mom had something nice to wear as she followed through on her nursing exams in the US. It looks a little bit like a doctors white coat actually.
I didn’t know this existed until I asked my parents about some of the old sustainable practices. Making your own clothes was definitely a big one for them. My grandmother only had an elementary education but she sent all six kids to college, nursing school and medical school. She was frugal but wise, she invested before it was even a thing in the Philippines, she was a maker.
This week, I encourage you to ask your parents or grandparents about how life was before the world of disposables took over.
