Shake it like a Polaroid picture.
It’s taken me almost a month to recover from vascular surgery. I completely underestimated how it’d affect my energy levels. I’ve been crazy frustrated.
The second I gave in, the second I accepted that it takes as long as it takes, I got a message to tell me I’m booked to teach at Pineapple Studios.
Lesson learned.
Love

Read Part 1 & 2 first
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Neuroscience has proven that pain does not always equal damage. That hot flame is painful to touch, but if you touch it for just a second you won’t have caused any damage. Soldiers shot in battle may not even feel it, because the threat of being killed is so great, it overrides any other message being sent from the tissues. A mere bullet wound isn’t worth worrying about. You feel something scratch you and just think it’s a thorn bush, but then someone says they just saw a potentially deadly snake by your leg. The stimulus from your leg has not changed, but your brain has just gone into override and those threat signals have been up-regulated to a whole new level of pain! The damage is no different, but the pain is.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Based on all the factors above, some people with minor physical damage or even no damage at all can still perceive it as highly threatening. This is one of the reasons that people develop persistent/chronic pain. Their nervous system becomes sensitive to these stimulus, meaning that it only takes a small trigger, be it a small flame or in the case of back pain, just bending over to pick up something light, to simulate pain. The nervous system has become ‘too protective’. People with 20 years of back pain can experience pain just by looking at someone lift something heavy with bad technique. We have functional MRIs to prove this. You could say they are reliving a past trauma in watching that person lift and this alone can stimulate their pain.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Pain is far too complex to grasp fully from an couple instagram posts. Scientists have spent their lives studying it. If you are interested in further reading message me personally.

Read part 1 first.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A child who has just fallen over will look to their parents for a reaction. A calm parent will often result in a calm child. Yes they may be a little sore. After all there is still some tissue damage, but no where near as much as if they have an anxious parent panicking over them. This will cause a greater threat response in the child and they will cry out in pain. They are innocent to the world so their response will have great reliance on the past experiences and reaction of their parent rather than themselves.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So what factors besides actual damage to our tissue (bones, muscles, ligaments etc) are involved in this complex network of interpretation of threat and the response which follows?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Past experiences - Highly important! Have you hurt your back before and what happened? Do you know someone who has been ‘crippled’ by back pain?
General health factors - Being fit and healthy will often allow you to bounce back more quickly.
Beliefs - potentially the biggest factor in whether or not you will develop long term pain. Do you believe there is serious damage? Has someone told you you should stop moving otherwise you will cause further damage and make things worse. Are you now worried about what you can and cannot do? Has the doctor told you you have the back of an 80 year old? Negative beliefs can make pain a while lot worse.
Sleep - a lack of it.
Psychological well being / mental health - greater anxiety will often lead to a greater pain response and maladaptive pain behaviours such as avoiding any lifting at all.

Continued in Part 3

Pain is designed to protect us from damage. Without it we would be constantly hurting our bodies. Look up the condition ‘Congenital Analgesia’, a condition where people do not experience any pain at all.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If we touch something hot a message is sent from our hand up to our brain via our nervous system. Our brain then decides how threatening the hot stimulus is. Once a certain threshold of threat is reached, an alarm system will be triggered in the brain “danger danger” and the brain will create a pain signal which is felt in the hand. We quickly pull our hand away. Pain is an output of the brain. The hand did not send a ‘pain message’ to the brain to tell the brain it is in pain. It sent a message of potential threat, which the brain interprets and quickly determines how threatening the stimulus is. Depending on the situation, the brain will up-regulate (more pain) or down-regulate/inhibit (less/no pain) the signal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For this reason the level of pain experienced is very rarely proportional to the injury sustained. The interpretation and response from the brain is based upon a highly complex network of information relaying back and forth at incredible speeds. The pain produced is a reflection of how threatened each human perceives itself to be.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When a professional musician hurts their hand, they will rate their pain higher than your average person. This is because they place a lot of value on their hands. The perceived threat of damaging their highly important hands is much greater, yet there is no more damage compared to your average person. This in turn leads to more pain. The brain is saying, do not do that again!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Similarly if you think that your back injury is a fractured spine you will rate your pain much higher than if you think it is just a muscle strain. Upon receiving x-ray results people often report a sudden increase or decrease in pain. The damage has not suddenly changed, their perception of threat has!
