What a weekend! It was such a privilege to get to work with #usaweightlifting at #18njc. Such a cool experience to share some of my medical skills with the athletes to help them on the platform and also moving forward in all of their athletic endeavours. I learned a ton from all the clinicians, staff, and coaches that have inspired me to keep pushing and learning as an athlete, coach, and clinician. #ClinicalAthlete #sportstherapy #rehab #weightlifting

Preparation, Narratives, and the Process

The training process is so complex as are the circumstances of any given day of competition. Yet, as coaches and athletes, we don’t want to believe that what we’re participating in is this stew of chaos whose outcomes we can only mildly influence

So we tell ourselves these stories of what has happened before, what we did after in our preparation leading into competition, and what is happening on the day of competition itself to make sense of the world around us. To disregard that is to disregard the world view of the coach or athlete, i.e. their overarching meta strategy for dealing with things

The training process is this thing that you partake in for the duration of your athletic career that involves learning, attempting, failing, adapting, to the far reaches of exhaustion and madness

It often seems like it’s not the technical know how itself of why things are going wrong or right or the principles underlying your preparation but the comfort of having experienced the thing before that allows you to overcome it in future exposures

My ongoing, internal narrative is that preparation is everything. Preparation is the only thing under our control. Relying on this almost external spiritual power to draw forth performance is unreliable and runs counter to the type of training we want: consistent, disciplined, less volatile, more predictable

You perform well at a competition, and suddenly that validates your preparation. But it’s all so complex. It’s akin to having a textbook great athlete, giving her a program, her finding success in it, and you being touted as a good coach. That athlete would find success in a shit program or the best program, and her success is independent of the program itself. You take a textbook terrible athlete and give him a program devised from the brains of a team of five highly qualified coaches, and he sees mediocre results. Therefore, you’d think that the coaches are terrible at what they do, but that’s not true either

Wisdom Wednesday: Having trouble touching your toes? Do you get a pain behind your knee or in your calf when you try to touch your toes? If you answered yes to both of these you probably have some sciatic nerve tension and/or impingement. Try this sciatic nerve floss to improve mobility and neural tension.
This mobilization is also beneficial if you are experiencing numbness and tingling in your lower extremity. If you have persistent numbness and tingling is probably a good idea to get that checked out by a trusted clinician.

Ironman Raleigh 70.3 kicked my butt today but at least I got a good tan.
Race Report: hot, humid, hilly and humbled.
After completing my first 70.3 I have a whole new respect for my patients, friends and fellow racers. What you all do is truly inspiring. Best of luck to everyone racing this season.

Open and closed chain stability drills are key in our approach to post op shoulder rehab...here we have @zay_day of the NY Jets dominating some drills that are geared toward improving coordination and finely tuning the nervous system’s ability to control the shoulder complex under load.
The input that the nervous takes in during these types of drills far surpasses any modality that favors passively doing something TO an individual.
We seek to put our patients into challenging but manageable situations and allow them to have an organic movement experience...we are from Portland so it just makes sense.

With the ⬆️sedentary lifestyles people have, one of the most highly debated topics nowadays is “does poor posture correlate to pain?” At this time unfortunately, things are unclear as you have some such as Yamamoto (2015) who argue that YES “faulty” posture can be linked to pain (such as forward head being the cause of neck / shoulder pain). Misconception 1: Strength training will cause weight gain

It is well established that concurrent strength and endurance training can improve strength and endurance performance without concomitant hypertrophy (increase in muscle size). (Paavolainen, 1999; Guglielmo, 2009; Millet, 2002). I've yet to read an article that demonstrated increased hypertrophy or body-weight following strength training for distance runners.
