@alexhonnold and @tommycaldwell charge up the final pitch of The Nose, with all 2900’ of the route and it’s yawning exposure visible below. That they began their climb waaaaaaay down at the sun-shade line along the base less than 2 hours before still boggles my mind. Of course, it wasn’t without a few bumbles along the way, as Alex felt they were “moving super slow and botching” the lower half of the route, and Tommy dropped a jumar and had to follow the upper half at times “grabbing the rope with one hand and locking off like it was a jug.” 😳 Alex almost even cried on top when he saw their time (true story!). Watch it all unfold in the upcoming film from @reelrock.
This will probably be my last post about this climb for awhile, as I am headed out of Yosemite to cooler lands up north, Alex is off on “a soulful walk in the woods,” and Tommy is soon back to his wonderful family in Colorado. What a month! I have some evolving thoughts on risk and climbing I’ll likely share down the road, but for now I hope everyone finds their own ways to enjoy the summer months with good people and create meaningful lasting memories 🙏
