#climatechange

MOST RECENT

I toured New Orleans on the 10 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. This grassy lot once had multiple houses on it. They were leveled/washed away by the floods. There have been enough studies linking climate change to recent extreme storms, among other issues, but our Pres believes global warming is a hoax. I guess we’ll have to educate ourselves. Happy #earthday everyone! Did you know that it was first celebrated in 1970? Today #earthday is coordinated globally in more than 192 countries @earthdaynetwork . #earthday2018 is dedicated to providing the information and inspiration to end plastic pollution... I took the photo of the #weddellseal some weeks ago on #stoningtonisland #antarctica πŸ’™, a continent, that is as all of our nature, threatened by #climatechange and #plasticpollution . #bethechange #endplasticpollution #earthdaynetwork #gexpedition #gadv #nikonphotography #wildlifephotography #travelphotography #travelgram #seal

Happy Earth Day 2018 🌏
Since January I have set myself a few boundaries to challenge my limits in change.
* No new clothes for 1 full year.
* Incremental change in product use - natural soaps/learning new cleaning techniques with minimal chemical use.
* Minimising single use products in my day-to-day life - paper/plastic bags, coffee cups, cotton pads, straws etc.
* Joining the crusade publicly so that I may inspire even 1 person to make a little change in their habits. If we all stopped using single use coffee cups, in 1 day in the UK we would prevent the waste of 7m cups of which only 1% are recycled... What changes are YOU making so that the generations after us may long see the beautiful textures of this planet? *Environmental Audit Committee report 2018

Today we aren't just celebrating #earthday, we are recognizing it's important role as platform and catalyst to push our world towards planetary justice. 1990's Earth Day accelerated the discussion of climate change to a household concept. Last year climate change outnumbered Earth Day in media references by over 25 folds!
So thank you Earth, Earth Day, and all those who have helped educate others about climate change, environmental racism, pollution, deforestation, biodiversity loss, food justice, clean energy, and so much there. Enough talk- let's act!

Since it's still 🌍🌎🌏 day back home in Canada, I wanted to share some of what I recently learned about coral, and climate change:

Corals as we think of them are actually the limestone exoskeleton of coral polyps, soft bodied organisms similar to jellyfish. The colours we see are given to the corals' skeletons by the pigmentation of algae that live within them. The sugar resulting from the photosynthesis of the algae is the primary food source for the coral, BUT... if water temperature levels rise too high, the algae actually begins to poison the coral, so it will actually expel the algae, therefore losing its food source, and its colour. THIS is what coral bleaching is, and if the temperatures don't return to normal after a few weeks, the corals will die of starvation. Climate change and the rise in water temperature is killing coral, and it's a direct result of our pollution and our behaviour.

One change to consider to help, hear me out : cut out or at least REDUCE your consumption of beef. One third of the world's farmable land is used to produce food for livestock, but beef has by far (way far) the worst environmental impact - cows produce methane, which has roughly 23 TIMES the impact of CO2. And experts estimate one cow expels 100-200 litres (or even up to 500L) a day. When you consider the amount of water it takes to irrigate the land for their food, and then the emissions from the trucks and planes used to ship the meat in addition to that....it's a LOT of emissions for our earth to handle, and contributes to things like the rising water temperature. Even reducing how often you eat beef, or choosing another meat/protein source in its place makes a huge difference. I highly encourage you to do your own research, and to watch documentaries (like Before the Flood, where I learned quite a bit in a section about beef) on the subject. The more we learn and better educated we are, the more of a difference we can make !

Let's build healthy, earth-happy habits, no matter how small, and hopefully we can slow down or eventually reverse some of the damage we've done to our beautiful mama Earth. πŸ’• (Photo of the Heart Reef from our flight over the GBR!)

Hey everyone! As some of you may know I am currently in rehearsal for new play called SALTY by Aaron Johnson and directed by Benita de Wit. It’s about penguins. As most of you probably know, it’s Earth Day. So why not put these two awesome things together? If you buy a ticket TODAY, before Earth Day ends, your ticket will turn into a tree. 2k18 Go Green, right? Do a good thing for yourself, do a good thing for the planet. It’s time to care about our planet. We are destroying our home with pollution and depleting our finite resources. Please understand the choices we make every day have consequences. My hope is that my generation and the ones after can find a way to reverse the damage that has already been done. #earthday #climatechange #science #reducereuserecycle
