The 1969 version of Masteting the Art of French Cooking I inherited from my mom. I have cooked many recipes, but it never loses its allure, no matter how dog eared it gets. ❤️ (or its Cape Cod classic moldy smell...) #classiccookbooks #juliachilds #lovewhatyoudo

Topic of day : narrow
These narrow volumes were the first in my collection. Mum put one or two of them in my Christmas stockings, others I bought from her shop, and the very old ED is from Mum's collection which I am absorbing into mine. I couldn't wait to start cooking from them, and read them from cover to cover imagining my kitchen in the future and what I would make in it. Took them to uni but not much chance to experiment in halls but everything changed when I met someone at a party who was at a cook school in London. He told me that they cooked all that sort of stuff there....a place called Leith's School of Food and Wine. Well, I finished my degree and went! .

Illness and school have determined that leftover chili and cornbread are tonights dinner. I used a recipe from James Beard's "American Cookery", so the Every Recipe Challenge continues to proceed. #everyrecipechallenge #cornbread #baking #jamesbeard #classiccookbooks #americacookery

The first cookbook I ever bought - sadly disintegrating, but still much loved. #claudiaroden

Mary Berry's Complete Cookbook was the very first cookbook I ever bought. Who would have thought this 1995 edition would have sparked a cookbook obsession of epic proportions. The book has recently been republished by @dkbooks and looks brilliant. However, I'm rather fond on my classic edition, slightly retro version. The heavenly chocolate cake and Victoria sandwich recipe pages are rather wrinkled after being splashed too many times, whilst the fruited banana loaf recipe is an absolute favourite of mine. #classiccookbooks #fdblogger #cookbook #maryberry #maryberryscompletecookbook #completecookbook

gastronomymagic: MFK Fisher had a very strict Grandma who was a Campbellite and believed that food should be bland and plain. She was also a follower of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg's (yes the cereal guy) dietary restrictions at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. So when Grandma was away at religious services, the whole family indulged, feasting after famine.

"We indulged in a voluptuous riot of things like marshmallows in hot chocolate, thin pastry under the Tuesday hash, rare roast beef on Sunday instead of boiled hen. Mother ate all she wanted of cream of fresh mushroom soup; Father served a local wine, red-ink he called it, with the steak; we ate grilled sweetbreads and skewered kidneys with a daring dash of sherry on them." .

Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher (July 3, 1908 – June 22, 1992), or MFK Fisher as she was more commonly known, is one of America's most loved food writers. Fusing memoir and gastronomy with a deft hand, utilising the qualities of both to comment on the climate of her time, there has never been anyone quite like her in the food firmament. She penned 27 books, including a translation of Brillat-Savarin's 'The Physiology of Taste' which in itself is no small feat.

“Our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others.”

"We eat every day, and if we do it in a way that doesn't recognize value, it's contributing to the destruction of our culture and of agriculture. But if it's done with a focus and care, it can be a wonderful thing. It changes the quality of your life." ~ Alice Waters

And then there was Alice. Alice Water, the godmother of organic, local, farm-to-table California cuisine. The proprietor and chef at Chez Panisse, Alice has written plenty of cookbooks as well as creating the Edible Schoolyard program which began at the Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley and now has affiliate programs in other states. She has had quite a crazy life, and has remained an activist and passionate fighter for food rights amongst all the other adventures she has had. Read more on our FB page!

"The dishes that lie in the sink we will wash together, in our own time. Then I go into the garden. We have about an acre; I grow the old-fashioned sweetcorn that we have in India and cucumbers. I'm always in search of the perfect cucumber. I have gardeners to keep everything under control and I do the enjoyable bits. I bring in the chillies - they take 24 hours to dry, so I do batch after batch - and if there's a frost coming I also bring the tender plants on the patio inside." ~ Madhur Jaffrey

“Too many families seldom sit down together; it’s gobble and go,” she wrote, “eating food on the run, reheating it in relays in the microwave as one dashes off to a committee meeting, another to basketball practice. As a result we are losing an important value. Food is more than fodder. It is an act of giving and receiving because the experience at table is a communal sharing; talk begins to flow, feelings are expressed, and a sense of well-being takes over.” ~ Marion Cunningham

James Beard changed Marion Cunningham's life. Marion had been a homemaker and mother to an unremarkable husband who didn't care about food. She developed agoraphobia, and then became an alcoholic, pulling herself out of that state and never touching alcohol again. In 1972 at the age of 50, Marion signed up for one of James Beard's cooking classes and became his assistant of 11 years, as well as one of his closest confidantes and friends.
.
.
Recommended by James to a publisher, she was hired to re-write the classic Fannie Farmer cookbooks for modern audiences which are still revered to this day.

This is Helen Evans Brown's classic regional American cookbook 'West Coast Cook Book' which inspired James Beard to start his long friendship with her. Published in 1952, Brown published Helen Brown's West Coast Cook Book. It stood out from cookbooks of the day as it was well-researched and well-written, incorporating Helen's knowledge of a wide variety of cuisines and sense of taste. Infusing her scholarly approach through bibliographic references, historical context and social significance, she transformed how we look at cookbooks and recipes, informing of the essential nature of gastronomy in culture, philosophy, history and anthropology.
.
.
In a revolutionary move, Helen also pushed for using local, fresh ingredients, preferably from your own backyard, such as "avocados, cherimoyas, figs, guavas and loquats as well as seasonings like cilantro and garlic, which until that time was rarely used and teriyaki sauce. Brown advocated fusion of cultural dishes into American cuisine and the use of fish which was locally caught. Her vision, laid the foundation of what became known as California cuisine." Before James Beard, Julia Child, Alice Waters and all the other stars in the modern American food firmament, there was Helen Evans Brown. This formidable foodie was an American chef and cookbook writer, and recognised as a nationally known food expert who advocated using fresh produce and developed California cuisine in its early days.
.
.
Helen wrote many cookbooks and regular food cookbooks, and was an avid cookbook collector. In the 50s and 60s she was the authority in the Californian food scene. James Beard adored her so that they wrote to each other for many years, these letters having been collected in a book called, 'LOVE AND KISSES AND A HALO OF TRUFFLES: Letters to Helen Evans Brown'.

"At the table, one never grows old. Isn't that enough reason to come home at the end of the day, roll up one's sleeves, fire up the stove and start smashing the garlic?" ~ Judith Jones
