Lots of folks who live north of the Carolinas treat "the South" as a dirty word. They either truly believe or choose to believe that all of the South is a throwback to less progressive times, less progressive attitudes. #CivilRightsEra The history is real. But that history is part of the reason so many black freedom fighters, and legends in politics, education, ministry, music, and the arts came out of cities like Atlanta. That history, in part, led to boundless ambition and drive in a people.
Today, some of the remnants of a past time exist outside of our major cities. Like other parts of the country, legacies of hate are mostly tucked away and only time and exposure (to "others" and to daylight) will wear them out. Cause them to weaken and fade. But I'm proud to live in a diverse metropolitan city like Atlanta with cultures from around the world, the world's busiest airport (a point of pride but also a lesson in patience and savvy), options, and opportunities to live life in balance. Proud like I will always be proud of where I come from. #Antigua
And I can't wait to see what the state of Georgia does on November 6. Could we actually birth the country's first black woman governor? #StaceyAbrams Ha! I'm here for it! #TheNewSouth
