No, I am not mad at the Civil Rights movement, it is something Americans should take pride in. It accomplished a lot by establishing more rights for POC. However, the ignorance of that post is hilarious and definitely idiotic. That post has ignorance written all over it. -Mel 🇺🇸

Lots of folks who live north of the Carolinas treat "the South" as a dirty word. They either truly believe or choose to believe that all of the South is a throwback to less progressive times, less progressive attitudes. #CivilRightsEra The history is real. But that history is part of the reason so many black freedom fighters, and legends in politics, education, ministry, music, and the arts came out of cities like Atlanta. That history, in part, led to boundless ambition and drive in a people.

Today, some of the remnants of a past time exist outside of our major cities. Like other parts of the country, legacies of hate are mostly tucked away and only time and exposure (to "others" and to daylight) will wear them out. Cause them to weaken and fade. But I'm proud to live in a diverse metropolitan city like Atlanta with cultures from around the world, the world's busiest airport (a point of pride but also a lesson in patience and savvy), options, and opportunities to live life in balance. Proud like I will always be proud of where I come from. #Antigua

And I can't wait to see what the state of Georgia does on November 6. Could we actually birth the country's first black woman governor? #StaceyAbrams Ha! I'm here for it! #TheNewSouth

Today marks 63 years since the lynching of 14 year old Emmet Till!

Till was lynched by Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam. Roy’s wife #CarolBryant alleged that the 14 year old “grabbed her waist and whispered obscenities.” Till was abducted, tortured and killed through a gunshot wound to the head and dumped in the #Tallahatchie River in Mississippi.
The perpetrators later admitted to killing Till while Carolyn also admitted to fabricating part of the story. They were acquitted but became part of a greater conversation in civil and human rights in America. Till was honored by the National Museum of African American History and Culture who placed his original casket on display as a symbol of #Freedom and #Injustice
His death was significant to the #CivilRightsEra and the fight for equal rights by African Americans.

The legendary #gospel group #DixieHummingbirds announced a major celebration for their 90 year milestone anniversary, with help from a special guest @aampmuseum. "It's just a great thing to see people coming together to spread the message of God's goodness," said #StevieWonder, who called into the news conference.
The music group was founded in 1928 and influenced #Americanmusic, including #rock and R&B, but they also had an influence during the #civilrightsera.

#CORINTHMiss. (AP) — #EberleneKing remembers her 15-year-old brother as he lay dying after white teenagers cruised through their black neighborhood in a pickup on Halloween night 1959 and shot him in the face. “His eyes … were hanging out,” King recalled. “His head was full of pellets.” #WilliamRoyPrather died the next morning in their hometown of #CorinthMississippi, a few miles south of the Tennessee line.

Eight white teens were charged with murder, but only one was convicted. #JerryDarnellGlidewell, then 16, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in January 1960 and served less than a year in state prison. Six of the seven others in the truck got a year’s probation through youth court, and an 18-year-old walked free.

The #blackteen’s slaying has never drawn much attention, even as federal and state authorities in the past 15 years have re-opened investigations of racially motivated killings from the #civilrightsera.

Now, the U.S. Justice Department says it has referred Prather’s killing to the state of #Mississippi “for potential prosecution.” The Associated Press dug into the case to reveal information not previously reported, including details about the Justice Department’s investigation and AP interviews with King and Glidewell.

It’s unclear whether a district attorney will pursue charges against any aging defendant in a decades-old case where witnesses’ memories may be fading and some pieces of evidence, including the truck and the shotgun, have disappeared.🙄🙄🤔 The case is briefly mentioned in a report the department filed in March — the same one that said the department is reviving its investigation into the brutal 1955 killing of another black teenager in Mississippi, Emmett Till.

Ok peoples... After a year of planning. This week I start producing interviews for my documentary Political Silence: The Unheeded Voice of Imam Jamil Al-Amin. I will be interviewing California based scholars, journalists, community activists and entertainers starting here in the Bay Area, and then traveling to other parts of the country to produce additional interviews.

The purpose of this documentary is to educate the general public on who Imam Jamil Al-Amin as a political prisoner, and share why it's so important for Imam Jamil to be allowed his right to speak by lifting the unofficial gag order to be able to share his history as one of the last remaining civil rights activists of yesterday, and express his thoughts of today's politics.

Snippets of interview footage will be placed online to review. This is a totally independent documentary project with funding coming out of my own pocket, and if you would like to make a donation to the project to help with production there will be a link to do so.

After production if there is any funds generated from sales and/or distribution 100% of funds will be donated to assist with Imam Jamil's legal costs. The documentary will also be dedicated to the memory of, Ed Brown, the older brother of Imam Jamil and advocate who eagerly fought for his justice to be released.
