Following his recovery, Martin Luther King went back to work for civil rights by nonviolence. Various other black leaders, such as Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael, disagreed with peaceful racial integration with the white communities. These disagreements created tensions within the SCLC.
In Albany, Georgia, a desegregation Raül was planned in late 1961. He was arrested during police crackdowns on the event, even though the rally was peaceful. King was sentenced to prison in July 1962 for the earlier arrest. He was released when the local police chief paid the fine that Martin refused to pay. Billy Graham was another supporter of King and advocated for his release.
In 1963, King was arrested again, this time in Birmingham, Alabama. While he was in jail, the SCLC and other protestors practiced sit-ins and other forms of “civil disobedience”, as Gandhi called it. The marches and sit-ins began peacefully, but the Jim Crow laws, allowed police to try and shut down the march. The police used strong water hoses and dogs to control the crowds, which were peaceful. The nation was shocked at the brutality of the police, especially when it was revealed that children were present among the protesters.
King scored a massive victory as “black only” and “white only” signs began to be taken down. Public life, including restaurants and other public destinations, began to be free from segregation.

A few people that should be celebrated for their commitment to love and justice today alongside Martin Luther King Jr.
.
We are history weather we actively involve ourselves or not. I urge each one of you to examine how you can use whoever you are in the service of what you say you believe. -Audre Lorde
.
Coretta Scott King was an American author, activist, civil rights leader. Coretta Scott King helped lead the Civil Rights Movement along side MLK Jr. She was a great supporter of LGBT rights and the women’s movement. Coretta founded the King Center in Atlanta, and convinced Regan to make MLK Jr. day a national holiday in 1983.
.
Ella Josephine Baker, an African-American civil rights and human rights activist. She was a largely behind-the-scenes organizer whose career spanned more than five decades. She worked alongside some of the most famous civil rights leaders of the 20th century, including W. E. B. Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, A. Philip Randolph, and Martin Luther King Jr. She also mentored many emerging activists, such as Diane Nash, Stokely Carmichael, Rosa Parks, and Bob Moses.
.
Bayard Rustin was an openly gay African American leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. He was a leading activist of the early Civil Rights Movement, helping to initiate a 1947 Freedom Ride to challenge, with civil disobedience, the racial segregation issue related to interstate busing. Rustin promoted the philosophy of nonviolence and the practices of nonviolent resistance, which he had observed while working with Mahatma Gandhi's movement in India, and helped teach Martin Luther King, Jr. about nonviolence.

Profound and wise words, which, in many ways, are more relevant today than they were 50 years ago. #mlk #peace #justice #loveistheanswer #nonviolence #servicetoothers #equality #morality #civilrights

In memory of #mlk #mlkjrday, I share my collection of books that have helped to make a contribution towards understanding racism and empowered communities towards civil rights. We hope to review all of these brilliant books for @thebookslamist due to their centrality to social justice.

Question?!? In 2018 would there be a #MLK ? With #SocialMedia (everyone all in our business) , #Womanist movement ( #Idon'tneedaman) on the rise and the Whistle blowers in Hollywood speaking about sexual misconduct at the work place. How many people in 2018 could follow a Married Minister which some books suggest was a #nymphomaniac which is why he could not uphold his vows? I just don't see the Next great male Colored Leader coming from the #usa . We/They would tear them apart and then post #memes about them on their way down.
Calling it now the next big #activist will be a FEMALE from the womanist movement or a male from the #MiddleEast, #Africa #Latinamerica, or the #caribbean region. Where their collective mindset are more traditional. #martinlutherking #malcolmx #civilrights #rosaparks

Happy Martin Luther King Day! We celebrate a day of service to our nation and its wonderful heroes who have provided catalytic improvement for the lives of millions, so we can celebrate our differences and live in harmony. His sacrifices will not be forgotten.

The Ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but were he stands in times of challenge and controversy. -MKL jr. .

Struggled to choose just one quote so put a bunch of them together as they’re all so amazing and still so relevant in the fight for #AnimalRights #HumanRights #CivilRights #Equality and #Kindness for all.

One of my all-time favourite quotes also came from this great man - "Darkness can not drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate can not drive out hate; only love can do that” 💕 .

‪Yesterday, we encountered a lady that expressed her fear of freezing to death in the cold weather. ‬
‪Not only did we partner with The Pheonix Leadership Foundation to get her a sleeping bag, one of our volunteers got her off of the streets, and took her some place warm. #lovebeyondwalls
