On my way down from Cerro San Cristobal on Easter with the whole of Lima spread out below me. I followed some of the locals taking the stairs down instead of going back via the road. There are only a few sections which have a sturdy railing otherwise there's just the drop on either side. The steps themselves are smooth and well constructed albeit not always the same height but I felt fairly safe. They cut all the way down the valley through the small houses built into the hill. Once I got down to the town itself, the pilgrims panting and making their way up and the hawkers carrying their body weight on their shoulders seemed to disappear. I think I took a slightly different route as I ended up far right from where I started but along the way I got to see the neighbourhood of Rimac away from the festival crowds.
